Things to expect following Gall bladder removal.?!

Question: Had gallbladder removed just before xmas and at first felt really great. A polyp necessitated surgery and apparently my gallbladder was very inflamed. Had laperascopic proceedure. I am finding that I have to run to the loo very soon after eating and do not really appear to be digesting food properly. I have indegestion too. I just feel really tired and worse than before op. I was not experiencing symptoms just pain in my left side which diserpeared after surgery which is strange as I was told the pain had nothing to do with gall bladder? Have pain now on right side of upper part of chest and just feel rather nauseous. Is this normal after recent surgery to remove gall bladder?

Hello,

(ANS) My best friend is a retired GP and she has just had her gall bladder removed due to inflammation caused by a large gall stone which needed to be extracted.

No.1 You should feel better post operatively NOT worse.

No.2 You should be able to eat a completely normal diet, although you are advised to try and avoid excessively fatting foods like big fry ups'.

No.3 Any bile produced by the body is normally stored by the gall bladder so once its removed the body should be able to absorb the bile rather store it as before.

**The symptoms you describe don't sound very good to me and my immediate advise is get yourself seen by the doctor ASAP!! especially the chest pain is very alarming. NOTE: The gall bladder has an intimate relationship to your liver and the liver is a large organ and is located in the chest area and on the right upper side. Get seen by a doctor as soon as you can DON'T leave this as it sounds like you do have some post op issues that need further investigation.

Kind Regards & best wishes for 2008 from Ivan

How are you eating? Foods higher in Fat/oils will cause you to be ill- the gallbladder regulates how fats/oils are sent to your liver. I have never heard of the chest paid.. you may want to speak to a doctor..

I had mine removed in November, and it was the best thing I ever did. I am pregnant, and was 14 weeks pregnant when I had the surgery to have it removed. I was having gall-bladder attacks... (which hurt really really bad) I am not sure why you were told that a diseased gallbladder does not hurt, because it does, mine hurt so bad sometimes I would fall to the ground.

Anyways... I was told that I could expect loose stools after the surgery until your body "fixes" itself. Your gallbladder controls how much bile your body emits to your stomach to digest food. Now, the bile is going strait from your liver to your stomach. So, it does not "know" how much to give to your stomach. Things should start to even out before long.

I have also been experiencing some pain, that is different from before, the doc says it is probably scar tissue and my body getting used to the gall bladder not being there anymore. I sometimes feel as if I can not breathe my chest hurts so bad. The doc prescribed me Levsin. I just saw him today, so I wish I could tell you if it is going to work or not.

Good luck, and you should be feeling better soon. If not, talk to your doc about it, and ask him about trying Levsin. Try some anti-diarrhea meds also.

Had my gall bladder removed 2 years ago. Immediate post-operative symptoms are rushing to the loo frequently if you are not controlling your diet. You need to speak to the nurse at your health centre who should explain what foods are good for you, what foods you should eat in small portions and at occasional times and what to AVOID. Whilst the problem of my gall bladder was resolved, I have been left with a hiatus hernia, perhaps an area of investigation you need if you have pains in your chest and suffer with indigestion.
Don't leave it and think it will "go away". Seek advice
Good luck
