All emetiphobics.....?!

Question: What do you do to make sure you do not throw up? I am highly emetophobic, and go to drastic measures to make sure I do not throw up... Wast my hands constantly, cheak all dates on food, won't eat anything that i have ever ate before i have thrown up in the past, Stay away from ppl that look suck, and alot more...It is really annoying but I can't help it. Any tips on how to overcome this phobia?? Thanks!!!

This isn't really an answer.. but I had to comment..

I never thought of it as emetiphobia.. but I'm guilty as well.

I don't think that it's such a bad phobia to have.. I know I avoid "throwing up" disease to a compulsion, but I tend to have a lower incidence of colds, flu and the like compared to my friends and coworkers. I look at it like: a little planning, a little good hygeine, a little extra lysol in my day and more time to ENJOY life!

I'm a fiend with a can of Lysol and a bottle of bleach.. and I *never* share my pens.. My fridge rules by "if in doubt, throw it out" (which is usually!). My kitchen is clean, my hands are washed often and well.. and I proffer hand sanitizer like it is the cure-all for the new millenium (it may well be).

The not eating something that you've thrown up in the past is similar to "bait aversion" - I don't do that because I blame the bug, not the food..but if you read any psychological studies on bait aversion, it's very interesting...

I wish more people had this phobia .. germs wouldn't stand a chance!

Also, slickkit person, I know what emetophobia is, I am one remember? Report It

  • Emetophobia is the irrational fear of vomiting, being around others who are vomiting, and/or the vomit itself.

In worst case scenarios, people with the phobia tend to avoid eating out, socializing and going to parties. They may hardly eat at all and that's why many are often diagnosed as anorexic, but not bulimic as this illness involves the induction of vomiting. Emetophobics will go to extraordinary lengths to avoid becoming violently sick

Well, start by telling yourself that throwing up sometimes is simply your body's way of getting rid of something it doesn't want in it. Throwing up is pretty rare, anyway. Look on the bright side... you won't have to worry about being bulemic.

Well I'm mainly afraid of others being sick.
But for myself, I keep mints with me, veeerryy carefull about sell by dates, always have hand sanitizer, and always use it.
For others, I generally just try to make sure the people I'm closest too where I am, know about my phobia, and they "protect me"
Like once I was on holiday with my friends, 2/7 were really really drunk and throwing up.
My other friend (sober-ish) not only helped them, but rushed me out the room, and would come and get me when the throwing up was over (actually I sat down the corrider for houuurs. but still)
I just find if people understand, they warn me, and help me :)
And I wish I knew how to overcome it!
