How do I get rid of my Insomnia!!!! And don't say go to bed!!?!

Question: I hear your concern! Insomnia is a serious problem because it affects our quality of life and our immune function too. My sleep disorder began when I was 16 - my story is at http://www.fms-help.com/insomnia.htm - I am now 56. A list of things I've tried for sleep (and how they worked for me) is at http://www.fms-help.com/sleep.htm There are different reasons for insomnia - biochemical, hormonal, lifestyle, stress, anxiety, etc. My sleep clock has been broken for 40 years now, so I have to rely on meds and supplements.

tylenol or advil pm. no tendency to become addictive... but i never take them more than two nights in a row. usually gets my pattern back to normal. hope this helps !

take melatonin

um...maybe getting off the computer is a start.

stop staying up all night and go to bed at a reasonable time so that your bodys internal clock will get back on track. that is the only way aside from sleeping pills.

hey dont give me a thumbs down cuz i speak the truth. I'M not the one with the problem LOL

booze biatch

AND you ppl need to calm down with the ratings WOW. you know alcohol makes you knock out godamnn.

for an all natural approach, try taking "kava kava" an herbal supplement an hour or two before bed. Try taking a warm bath, with bath salts an scented candles. Get relaxed with some sleepy time tea. Try to avoid caffeine.

I overcame mine by doing a lot of yoga! It calms your mind and body...

Read a book.

Drink a cup or two of Camomille tea.

Listen to music, especially classical, at a very low volume.

Exercise alot during the day.

u can try listening to soothing relaxing music while lying on bed or reading a story

Wow oh boy I answered a question like this before. Everyone has a different method. If I were you I would see a sleep therapist. There could be irregular brain waves causing you to stay awake.

And for the tweakers out there... they need to stop the drugs

I'm not saying you to. I just thought I'd through that out.

In Emergency situations where I need sleep I take Benedryl Works like a charm but you can't take it everyday because it is hard on your stomach and liver.

And the computer keeps me up sometimes. But the problem is that I normally go tot he computer when I can't sleep. It's a bad cycle.

Good luck.

I've tried lots of stuff....lots of exercise early in the day (not in the evening-it has the opposite effect), cut back on caffeine, benadryll (sometimes works, other times makes me jittery)....
Melatonin tablets work really well for some people (you can get them at GNC or a vitamin store), your body makes it naturally, but some people just have a deficiency, and it really messes with their sleep patterns. Maybe you could try one of those sleep hypnosis/relaxation cd's? Good luck to you!

I've been the same way for a long time... first is that you may need to get your circadian rhythm(your body's normal night and day) back on track... the way I do this is take a hot (lavender infused) bath about the time I should be getting tired, before I take the bath I take melatonin (the natural hormone that makes us tired, and is produced by the lack of light entering our eyes- you can buy synthetic pills about anywhere)... then go straight to bed, try not to watch t.v. ... as your body temp falls from the bath, and the melatonin starts to help your natural melatonin kick in more you should fall asleep...
sometimes I have to do this for a few weeks before my body wants to be tired at a more normal time
(right now I'm back to being up all night... lol)
Hope this helps :)

--Try not to take over the counter sleep pills, like anything P.M. or benadryl , they can just throw your natural rhythm even further out of cycle (even though they seem to help while you take them)

medical help

thats what im dealing with at the moment.
dont go to sleep now!!! drink coffee, eat something, go for a walk - do everything to stay awake and make sure you stay awake all day till its bedtime (evening)- make sure after than you wake up early in morning to avoid doing this all over again.
i do it once a week because of my schedule and going out.

hello

Get some real mint leafs next time you go to the grocery store.Boil the leaves until you have made a tea. Use some sweet and low.The tea makes you relax and helps you sleep.

This is what works for me:
- creating the habit of slowing down in the evening
- lowering the lights at some point (like 3 hours before bedtime)
- drinking warm milk (or tea in case you don't like milk, Camomile is very good).
- Avoiding distraction like tv or computer when going to bed.

If a book won't do the trick, I just lay back and start telling myself a story, imagining a scenery in its tiniest details or describe myself the way to someplace I go/went to. Usually I'm asleep before I get there. ;)

Good luck with that.

Or, in case you're old/responsible enough for that: sex.

Drink warm milk, and read my math book, surely makes me sleepy

Approach some psychologist because eating and sleeping is a habit besides nececities.,try to get up at morning, avoid smoking.Try to offer prayers and also carryout spritual exercises.Develop habit of listening and seening instead of talking.Try to keep a control over your breathing also carryout brething exercises.Carryout a comparision of world religions and as wel philosophy.

start by taking a hot bath. baths make you sleepy...showers wake you up. then lie in bed with a book, dim the lights and try to relax. usually this makes me fall asleep, even if I got into bed not feeling tired at all. also, if I cant sleep my doctor tells me to take some gravol (the drowsy kind) about a half hour before going to bed. only do this for a few nights though. then stop. or you can try any over the counter sleep pills. I just suggest no more then 2-3 days on them...even if they say they are non addicting. I never trust it. hope it works and hope you get some sleep. me...I'm off to the clinic...I think I have an ear infection.

I have been battling with insomnia for the past 7 years. It started when I experienced some pretty traumatic experiences within a cult my parents were apart of. Since then I've had issues up the wazzoo.

I have all sorts of fears of being alone and so on. So I have a boyfriend, he really helps me relax. Just by him being there helps allot.

But I still don't sleep enough, 3 nights out of 7 I don't sleep enough. I think being more active early in the day helps, but not hard core running or anything, that makes my back sore and makes it difficult for me to sleep. I guess just try to keep moving as much as you can while you're at work. Make sure you wake up at the same time every day. Try a nutritional suppliment called L-tryptophan. It is an amino acid that is in milk and turkey, it makes you tired. It helps me relax and I think it works better than Valerian or the other stuff people have been telling you about. I've tried everything, nothing worked until I started taking Ltryptophan.

Good luck, and try to relax as much as you can.

You won' get sleepy lying in bed waiting. Get up and exercise, if that won't make you tired and make you eager to sleep, try doing some chores like washing the dishes. That way you don't waste time trying to sleep, you have finished a chore!
