Is it possible to have pneumonia without really knowing it?!

Question: I had chest x-rays done and the results have come back as a collapsed lung and a shadow - possible pneumonia. I can't get to see the doctor until Friday, so I can't ask him until then. I have been down with what I thought was a chest infection for a few months (on and off) now. surely if I had had pneumonia the people around me would be ill too! I was in hospital last year with a partial lung collapse, but no shadows. I am feeling a little worried so if anyone can help shed a bit of light I would be grateful.

Well it sounds like you have exactly what I had. On Christmas weekend I was sick with the flu I thought. I felt a little better for a few days, then for New Years. I got sick again, I felt a burning pain on my right side. Every time I coughed I would struggle to catch my breath and the pain got worse. I had never had a collapsed lung (pneumo thorax) but I knew what I had because I worked in the medical field.

Having said that, I am shocked they let you walk out of any medical facility with a pneumo thorax. Go and get it taken care of, it is very risky, I myself have had to treat accident victims with bilateral pneumo thoraxes, it can be critical.

Go and have it taken care of ASAP! The risk is, what if another lung collapses then you will not be able to oxygenate blood adequately.

As far as Pneumonia it just means fluid in the lungs. There are many causes contagious and not contagious.

So go to a doctor and get a thoracocentesis.

Thoracentesis: (also known as thoracocentesis or pleural tap) is an invasive procedure to remove fluid or air from the pleural space for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. A cannula, or hollow needle, is carefully introduced into the thorax, generally after administration of local anesthesia. The procedure was first described in 1852

BTW I finally stopped coughing on Januray 7, 2008.

How could you have these results with out seeing a Doctor
IF you had a collapsed lung and pneumonia you would not be allowed to leave hospital
Any one with a collapsed lung and pneumonia must be admitted immediately- it is life threatening

If you get any worse,,,,call 911,,,,or in the U,K,,999,,,,,,you can have an heavy cold one minute then the next,,,Pneumonia,,,,some people go lightheaded,,,,,with it,,,,

You will know if you have it, believe me.

it is possible to have pneumonia without knowing it - its called walking pneumonia but i am certain that if your chest results where indicative of pneumonia you would have been asked to stay in the hospital or at least have a sputum sample taken and given an antibiotic treatment.

If you have pneumonia you should be having the following symptoms: Fever, Chest pain, Coughing (coughing out mucus) Chills, feeling very tired and weak, and irregular breathing. Have you been near anyone who has been ill? Or in a hospital? These are the usual ways someone would catch pneumonia.

Hells teeth! If you have a collapsed lung, you shouldn't be out of hospital!!! If your lung is collapsed, I'm surprised that your doctor won't see you until Friday. In fact I'm surprised you are well enough to be sitting asking questions on Yahoo answers! You should be in hospital. In fact I'm stunned they let you leave if that is what your x-rays show.
The people around you would not necessarily become ill. Some types of pneumonia are contagious and some are not.

Gecmis olsun!

Yes, it is possible, actually a friend of mine had the same case a couple of weeks ago.

Please get plenty of rest until Friday if you can't see a doctor earlier than that. Actually a bed rest is advised especially with a collapsed lung. I believe giving a call to your doctor and trying to get an earlier appointment isn't a bad idea.

Hope you feel better soon..
