I want a disease?!

Question: I already know that I have psychological problems, and what I'm asking for makes no sense.. but...
I want to get a chronic illness. Something debilitating and painful. A few of the ones I have thought about are: rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and ALS. The autoimmune and nervous system diseases seem more along the lines of what I want.
I would gladly take the place of someone who had this, and didn't want it, but we all know that is impossible. So is there a way to "catch" one of these? I know diseases are not like viruses or bacteria, but I have read that some infections cause the onset of autoimmune diseases.
I already know a bunch of people are going to tell me I'm crazy and I should go to a psychiatrist instead. Some serious replies would be appreciated.

Take it from those of us with chronic autoimmune diseases the attention only lasts for maybe a month. After that everyone sees you as a burden and treats you like scum. Employers and schools hate you for dragging down their statistics/productivity, your family can't stand you whining about your problems all the time, you can't pull your own weight which destroys your self-image, people think you're a freak and worry that you're going to give them something, etc, etc. People won't give you attention, they'll just tolerate you. You'll be worse off than how you are now.

And usually no one can 'see' an autoimmune disease either. Not until you're so bad that you have to have terrible surgeries, long stays in hospitals, or death. Crohn's for example is on average misdiagnosed 3 or 4 times before a proper diagnosis is given and goes undiagnosed until a patient is hospitalized. The damage being done is barely visible. Lupus and MS are almost always written off as depression or other psychological problems until they get extremely bad as well. The others aren't any different. No one believes you for a very long time when you have an autoimmune disease. At least with depression you don't go through 5 or 6 doctors who are convinced you're just faking it before you get a diagnosis.

You're getting as much attention with your psychological problems as you're ever going to get for having any other kind of illness. It sounds nice until everyone gets bored with you.

As for getting an autoimmune disease it's not possible. The nature of autoimmune diseases is that they are genetic or an improper formation during gestation inside the womb. Once you're born it's too late.

Nothing you can do to yourself if going to trigger the onset of anything and at 30 years old if it was going to trigger it would have already.

You could seek out HIV or something along those lines but even that you'll find hard. People who intentionally infect others with HIV can serve jail time. On top of that HIV in the US is headed towards being a rare disease and you're unlikely to even meet anyone with HIV unless you are in contact with certain hot-spots.

Beside the point, you'll absolutely hate yourself later if you were to manage to infect yourself with something. That thought always helped me when I've been thinking about doing stupid stuff because of my psychological problems.

Look at it this way: You've got it pretty sweet with your current situation. You can choose to make people aware of your psychological problems (or not if it's convenient), your psychological issues are getting you a lot of attention already, and unlike an autoimmune disease you can make major improvements in your condition.

I'm not insulting you for any of this. I fully understand where you're coming from and what you're looking for. It feels good when people seem to care about you and want to take care of you. The thing is, you don't need anything new to get that. Use what you've got and appreciate just how much people care about you already. Look at all these responses you've gotten from complete strangers.

why?

go to a psychiatrist........ u reali need to........ ur crazy

wow... wtf? i'm sure there is help for people like this?

hi, if your depressed then why would you want to make it worse?

think about it. everyone goes through stages in life.
illness?...i had one. i almost died.it just kills me when i hear that you WANT one.

everyone who loves you would be devistated. dont catch a disease unless you want to regret it.

lets see...
your probably under 30..
something bad just happened
and you want to torture yourself.

DONT DO IT. YOU ARE CRAZY. GO TO A DOCTOR.

Lymes disease can be onset by a tick bite but I think that might be in different parts of the world. I have an unknown and unexplained chronic illness that I would gladly give up, but wouldn't wish it onto anyone else.

You can apply to social security if your mental illness gets worse and you cant work. It takes forever to be approved. A full blown psychosis will get you into a psych ward fast enough. When you get out just apply for welfare. Mental illnesses are not like bacteria and virus illnesses but it can eventually destroy your life.

No, you don't want a disease. It may be you want the attention you'd get with having an illness rather than the pain and suffering that accompanies it. I'd suggest talking to your doctor about this. You're not the only one who has thoughts like this but they can be detrimental.

You need to get yourself a nice prion.. called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.. hope that helps :)

Sorry, but your big chance for a chronic illness will have to come along all on its own. Until then, you made the only logical suggestion...seek counseling.

Some diseases are transferable through an infection vector. Others are not. I have arthritis, you get it because of systemic failure, not because of a disease vector. And I'd be very glad to give you all of my medical conditions if you wanted them, I'd even give you my disability pension and I'd go back to work. But I tell you now, you wouldn't want it.

Despite what you think, it's no fun being sick. If you want an easy way to catch a disease, try unprotected sex with hookers. (They're not going to do that, because they don't want to catch something, but you get the idea.)

I heard about one guy that used a designer drug that was improperly made, and from the instant the needle went into his vein he knew something was wrong. Whatever the designer drug was, it was a bad batch and gave him instant Parkinsons disease. So there's one you can try for!

Why would you want to be sick. If you feel sorry for the people that have disease volunteer at a hospital and help people. Or if you just want to get sick for fun get a psychiatrist.

I was told I had ALS by some doctors a few years back. Turns out they were all wrong. It was horrible being told I would only live 2 more years. I don't think you really want this but thinking you want is shows some very deep problems.
I think you may have something like Munchausen's syndrome. It may not be what you have a all, I am not a doctor, but it is what first came to my mind when I read your question. Google it and see what you think. Please go for help before you end up harming yourself. You need to work hard and figure out why you are wanting to die from some horrible disease

if you are serious then maybe you have the same kinda thing like those people that want to cut off their limbs, you need help.

trust me..u dnt want lupus..
or arthritis..

omg..u should be lucky u dnt have an illness..

people these days...

here's a serious reply: YOU NEED TO GET HELP!! who would want to get a disease if they're perfectly healthy. i understand that u feel sorry for ppl who have a disease, but, do u have any idea how much those ppl would want to be in your shoes? getting a disease is not going to make a difference in the community, you will actually, most likely be making it worse. The best thing you could do is try and reach out to those who are suffering from a disease, because if those ppl heal, and recover, and saw you as the sick person, you would be dying to get healthy again. trust me.

Well, I guess you want a life of suffering. It's pretty sad what you're thinking about, however I don't think that if you did get your wish, that you'd be any happier in that state than in your present one. Do you think that those who are ill get more love and attention? You should ask yourself what you think you're going to gain by becoming ill. Whatever it is, I can't see a constructive result if you do achieve your wish. Why not go and volunteer for awhile, in a hospital, especially in the terminally ill area. I think you'll soon change your mind! If your life is lacking drama, become a doctor. You'll be on the front line, witnessing life and death on a daily basis!

The doctor just told me I have lupus. for years I been living a life of pain. i started thinking i was going crazy. the doctors keep running tests on me. they told me it was grave disease. now i get a call and now they are saying lupus. i can tell you, don't wish for it. be happy with the person you are.

I am sorry to be so blunt but you most definately need a bit of help. Why the **** would you want to be knocked down with some bad illness.Dont you think that all those poor ones suffering in pain or suffering with cancer maybe terminal cancer would love to swap with you and have a little depression for a while .

i have parkinson's . believe me you don't really want something like this. what you do want is understanding from people about a condition with no outside evidence. that is hard to deal with. you may just have to accept that people just plain don't understand what you have or are experiencing. and nothing you do will change some people and the way they think. mental illness is just beginning to be looked at as a true disease, usually caused by a defect in the production or use of chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. rhese have just recently, within i would say the last decade, been discovered as the problems causing mental illness. until then, people thought it was something you could just 'think' away. it is not, it is a physiological problem the same as a diabetic with litttle or no insulin production or thee decreased abiliity to utilize it. it is a physical condition and should be handled as such but most people don't realize that. don't wish something on yourself just to make others understand. some will never see the true picture. don't try beating a dead horse. find comfort where you are and don't worry about what others think. you have my prayers.

I'd trade if I could. I'd give you my daughters autism that keeps her peeling her skin off and banging her head. I'd give you my scarred up heart and I'd give you my rheumatic arthritis that keeps me from playing with my kids or working.

Instead of whining, go live in a village in Africa or Afghanistan. There you can starve and suffer in peace, and stop whining. You can bust your butt to live and die without anyone really caring. But then you wouldn't get all the attention you are craving.

This whole question just pisses me off. I don't think you need a psychiatrist i think you need to grow up and realize that the world doesn't revolve around ANYONE, much less you.
