I was on 3000mg of Metformin, 4mg of Amaryl and 15 mg of Actos a day with blood sugar levels well over 200 all the time. Walking 2-3 miles a day and eating a perfect diet did NOTHING for me. Insulin was the only thing that worked for me at that point and was literally a lifesaver. Without it, and continued highs like I was having, I was on the road to killing my kidneys and damaging my eyes, amongst other things. I went from being a perfectly controlled Type 2 to a Type 1 (or 1.5 as some doctors call me), in a matter of months, most likely due to a horrible auto-immune reaction I had.

So, my advice is to talk to your doctor. Some meds work for some people and not for others, and some people become resistant to oral meds. No two people are alike and diabetes can be very complex. Your life isn't worth risking by following diet/exercise advice here... there are so many possibilities and variables for your situation. Your doctor knows best.

CALL YOUR DOCTOR -not Yahoo.

You need to either go see your doctor or call him with these questions on your health.

I am on metformin.
It took a few weeks to get me on the correct doses.

CALL YOUR DOCTOR!!!

I'm on Metformin HCL 500mg (twice a day) too but I also take Novolog 70/30 (twice a day) so it would really be hard for me to tell if it's not working since my glucose readings are always between 95-125. Other factors can be why you are diabetic.........bad pancerous, absorbtion or creation of insulin by your body............you really need to talk this over with your doctor. Good luck.

There are several reasons why the drug is not working, it may be because you need a higher dose or you need a different medication to control your blood sugar level, or you have poor dietary compliance.

See a doctor.

I would see you r doc and ask about getting on Glyburide as well. Metformin and Glyburide make Glucovance. If he can just give you a script for Glucovance that would be easier. I take one 5/500mg pill in the AM and one in the PM and my BSL is normally around 115 When I do not take the meds (which I rarely forget to take them, but sometimes I do) my BSL runs anywhere from 125 to 250. When I was diagnosed, my BSL was 617 and the doctors were surprised I was even alive.

If the Metformin isn't working, then your diet and exercise routine need to be revised. I was on Metformin for nearly five years. When the sugar started creeping up, instead of increasing the dosage, trying a new drug, or submitting to insulin injections, I looked even harder for solutions. I found one... better diet, including more fruits and vegetables, and more exercise. I quit taking the Metformin on Dec. 13th and my blood sugar has averaged less than 90 mg/dl ever since. Forget the doctor... they're in it with the big pharmas. If you want to become less dependent on drugs, you'll learn all you can about the healing properties of natural foods. It's not rocket science, but it is a pretty well kept secret. At least until this M.D. started getting the word out:

It took my meds several months to get my glucose levels down. Call your doctor to ask him what he thinks. Could be you need an additional med, maybe not. ALWAYS talk to your doctor about things like this.
