What is the function of mucus?!

Question: Mucus is functional in coating the organ membrane, preventing pollutants from invading the organ.... e.g to stop dust/pollutants from entering the body as much as possible thru the nose/mouth ect... although many organs produce mucus such as lungs, intenstine, digestive system, throat, urinary tract, cervix and other body tissues.... hope this helps
