My oldest son who is 14 has been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes? What kind of fo!

Question: Last night when I called him. His blood sugar count was 396. At which it raise my concern. I asked him last night what he was eating, and he said a double cheeseburger. Then I ask him if his mother knew he was eating a double cheeseburger. And he said yes. (Keep in mind he was getting an insulin shot when he was talking to me on the cell phone.) I mentioned to him to that is good that he has lost 65 pounds so far, but he needs to lose more in order for to help with his blood sugar. (Also keep in mind he gets a insulin shot 4 times a day.) And he also keeps syringe full of glucose with him at all times in case he passed out with a diabetic attack.

If he tossed half the bun he would not have spiked that high, but I also suspect he had the fries and either a regular coke or a malted, too!

396 is not in danger of coma, but too darned high for comfort.

No way you caused this. Type 1 is usually caused by damage or infection of pancreas.

But your son needs some lessons in good food plan habits and what causes high glucose readings. I hope he has been to dietician or CDE for guidance in how to plan meals? and his mother too? and you? Everyone needs to get on the same page!!

Why don't you go to bookstore and find Dr Bernstein's book? or Atkins Diabetes Revolution? Both these books can answer lots and lots of questions for all of you. And especially for your son.

Dr Bernstein is himself a Type 1 and has achieved complete control of this disease!

Yes, I know! 14 yr olds know it all and will do what they see fit no matter how wrong it is. I raised 3 children and am now in the process of helping raise 4 grandchildren and all the children of my Sunday School kids!! They all call me Mom or Nana and come to me or phone for advice. Mostly the teens want advice on how to cope with their parents demands!!

I am type 2 diabetic on insulin! Diet is a hassel when what I really want is a double cheese burger with fries and a malted!!!!

well u have to watch the carbs in ur diet .the endcrologist can give u these answers

Well at 396 I'm surprised he hasn't gone into shock to be honest.
He needs to watch his carbs. His doctor should be able to set up a good amount. 15g=1 carb.
When it is that high he needs to drink water like it's going out of style, and keep checking his bs until it's down to a reasonable number.
Good luck.

Your asking about your son's health and well being. Please don't take answers from unqualified strangers on the internet. Your best bet is to talk to your sons Pediatrician. The Dr will have the best information and guide you and your son how to manage diabetes.

very dangerous, diet is only part of diabetic care. organ damage, coma and death can occur if not treated properly. see your doctor for the information

first of all what kind of parent are you? diabetes was a preventable diease he only has it because you did not take care of his diet and thats obvious to anyone because of the fact that he has lost 65 lbs so far and you said that he has more to go and thanks to your great care now he gets to deal with diabetes for the rest of his life so you will be dead in the ground and they will be cutting off his foot due to your care of his diabetes why you do what anyone would do and get off yahoo answers call your doctor and talk to him call other doctors and get second and third opitions and maybe if you can get away from yahoo answers you can google sone information on diabetes for your son dont forget webmd there is a world outside of yahoo answers and myspace

Please be guided by a Doctor or a Dietician in this matter.Have a friend her young daughter was diagnosed with the same recently she is working with the doctors and dieticians.also on four shots aday. Please do not take this to lightly.

There are two types of diabetes. In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce insulin, which is needed for the cells to absorb the glucose released into the bloodstream after eating. Glucose is the main sugar found in the blood, as well as the body
