When should I see a doctor about my cough?!

Question: My whole family had a virus last weekend ( your typical cold / flu). They have all gotten better, but I developed a cough. It kept me up all night, and I was coughing up stuff (TMI, I know... I'm sorry). I can't take a cough syrup like Robitussin because it makes me violently ill.

I don't want to go to the doctor if it is just a virus. What signs and symptoms should I look for to know I need to go?

If you're coughing up a lot of phleghm or even blood, you need to see a doctor...you could have bronchitis or even pneumonia...ususally with those you'll experience a fever...keep an eye on it...can you take cough drops to help soothe your throat? also tea with honey and lemon can help..good luck.
