If someone had the 24 hr. stomach flu, would it be wise to take dramamine to sto!

Question: I don't have the 24 hr. flu and I don't know anyone who does right now. This is a question of curiousity.

If someone came into urgent care complaining of a stomach flu, would there be anything the DR could prescribe to stop the vomiting or suggest dramamine?

I don't want any medical advice or anything. Again, this is out of mere curiousity.

Interesting question
Dramamine would not be the first, or second, or third choice.
It would not hurt - - but probably would not help much.
' Consider that a patient who is vomiting is unlikely to benefit from an oral medication. In an urgent care setting, we would use a parenteral medication such as IM Phenergan or possibly a suppository (if diarrhea is not also problematic).
I think it's an old wives' tail that a person should be allowed to vomit with an intestinal viral infection. If someone took the trouble to come in to urgent care, I would give something by shot or suppository to make them more comfortable.
The main clinical question is whether someone is dehydrated enough to need IV fluids until the vomiting subsides. This is not necessary for most cases of the "24 hour bug."

No, it can keep the bug in and the bug needs to come out. You should never take Imodium with a diarrhea bug either. Gatorade and toast, rice, apples and banana's are the best remedy. Good luck.

I don't think the doctor would prescribe anything for you to stop the vomiting unless you have been doing it non-stop for a long time. Vomiting is the way your body is ridding itself of the virus that you came in contact with. It's not necessarily a good thing to keep all that inside you. Dramamine probably would not help, anyway, since it's made for vomiting in relation to motion sickness. My suggestion would be to just relax and try to tough it out. Suck on ice chips to hydrate yourself.

So you're just sitting around the house wondering about other people vomiting?

Dramamine is not for that, it works on the equilibrium which causes motion sickness (if you are already motion sick, then dramamine won't work). For a stomach bug, you need an antinausea or antiemetic medication, either Emetrol or the generic equivalent. If the vomiting won't stop, then a trip to the ER is in order so you don't get dehydrated.

Compazine is used for nausea & vomiting. Also over the counter is Emetrol. Dramamine is for travel sickness & nausea that has to do with your inner ear or balance center.

You have to follow the instructions for the meds very carefully.

With stomache bugs, there is no need to throw up, its just becuase you are swollen and your stomache can't pass it through because of the swelling. There is no reason you have to vomit. It's just a reaction. It's mind over matter. Dramamine is an anti histamine, that's how it works. I doubt it would do anthing in this case.
