Can diabetics have milkshakes?!

Question: Like, just a regular small chocolate, strawberry or vanilla milkshake without really messing up their blood sugar? I'm just curious. :)

type 1 diabetics can have pretty much anything they want, all they have to do is take insulin for it. you don't have to avoid sugar or carbs. although it isn't healthy for anyone to eat too much sugar. if you weren't a diabetic your body would produce the insulin for what you ate, the only difference with a diabetic is they will have to manually put in insulin, and watch their blood sugars. I have been diabetic nearly 10 years, and the only time i really "avoid" carbs or sugar is if my blood sugar is high. otherwise, i make sure i just take my insulin...and go on living my life like a normal person. having diabetes these days is not like living in 1900 when they didn't have the medicine and technology they do these days.

i wouldn't reccommed it...but if they did they should check their blood sugar before and make sure they have their meds on them

It depends on what type of diabetes you have and whether or not it's controlled. It's really not a good idea to have a milkshake, since there are the milk sugars as well as the regular sugar in the ice cream and chocolate syrup.

Type 1 diabetics usually have to avoid carbs like the plague or risk having to take additional insulin.

Type 2 diabetics don't have as big a risk as Type 1s, but still have to watch their carb intake. I have the occasional "bad" stuff, like regular soft drinks instead of diet, a few cookies now and then, etc. My body still produces some insulin and most days I don't have to take any medication, but if I know I'm gonna be bad, I take one dose. If my sugar is high later on, I take another.

This isn't the best way to live with diabetes, but most diabetics cheat from time to time.

Not a very good idea. A typical 16 ounce (medium) shake from Mickey D's, BK, or Jack has over 800 calories... half of that is from carbs. That's equivalent to two meals for me. It would screw me up for at least a day. I'd have to walk really fast for two hours minimum to burn all that garbage out of my system.

Since my gf is a Type 1 Diabetic, I feel I have the experience to answer this one. YES! Diabetics can have milkshakes, or for that matter, basically any sweet or carb laden item. A Type 2 would have to figure the carbs involved, and make allowances in their daily intake to cover it. A Type 1 would just have to cover it with more insulin. Not every day mind you, but one of the first things they tell diabetics is that dietary restrictions aren't set in stone, and that denying yourself of all carbs and sweets is not good......just like in a diet. Just be careful and monitor sugar levels and adjust as needed.

Cindy is correct on this one. My daughter can have anything she wants. Again not every day but she has to count the carbs and take a shot of novolog after she is done. A couple weeks ago she had a christmas party for school and had cake, icecream, and punch and made and ate cookies. Yes, it was a night mare of carbs but she took a shot for it all. ( It was 8.5 units!) So listen to Cindy!

Absolutely!!!!!!! Compensate, compensate, compensate! Just figure out the grams of carbohydrates, inject, and enjoy! Never deprive yourself.
