Tonsillitis and ear pain in an adult.?!

Question: i was recently diagnosed with tonsillitis and i've been suffering from some really bad ear pain .. to the point were i'm only hearing muffly sounds, when i tilt my head in different directions i get shooting pains in my ear and sometimes the sound tends to come back for a few seconds then goes back to muffled, it's not constantly hurting.. it just tends to shoot with pain now and again but its agonising and i'm just wondering if this is normal when you have tonsillitis or if it's totally irrelevent to my infection.. thanks in advance for any reply's.

Hello Lisa,

I use to suffer with Tonsillitis from the age of 10 - 22 its unbearably painful and it can cause ear pain also, i dont think its a problem but if it doesnt get any better over the weekend then go see your dr again, normally with tonsillitus because it is difficult and painful to swallow you swallow harder which can put pressure on the ears and causes ear pain. I had my tonsils taken out at 22 which they recko can be a very dangerous operation but it was the best thing i ever did, pure agony for 3 weeks but so worth it in the long run, I hope you are feeling better soon babe, xx

yes its all connected-ears and throat will both be infected

hope youve got some antibiotics?
just keep warm hun, hope you feel and hear better soon x

sounds similar to what we've been suffering with.

We've not been diagnosed with tonsilitis but y partner has mumps and me and the kids have got a mild form mumps with an infection in the parotid gland. This has caused us to have sore throats, ear pain and also lumps around the jaw line, and neck.

It has passed in a few days. i presume you ahve antibiotics for the tonsilitis so you should be feeling better soon. You could take a pain killer to help with the pain

sounds like tonsilitis and an ear infection. you may also have a great deal of fluid in your ear. i would suggest letting your dr. know about this. an antibiotic should take care of the tonsilitis and the ear infection. call your dr. you need to be rechecked!!

Glad you have antibiotics for tonsillitis. Yes, ears, nose and thoat are all connected by tubes/channels.
Am sorry to hear you have ear-ache too,...I usually suffer with this if I have a bad cold resulting in sinus trouble. Warm olive oil and cotton wool in the affected ear can work wonders, I find but if the ear-ache continues indefinitely, consult GP.
Get well soon.

it could be the ear is infected which would be possible given the tube that runs between the ear and throat, or it could be just the ear is inflamed and it will settle down eventually if its infected the antibiotics should improve it. i had ear pain after a virus and had antibiotics but they didnt do anything doc said it was viral and would eventually settle by itself and it would take a while, it was about 2 months before it felt better
