Is there a glucose meter that does not require you to prick your finger?!

Question: And what are the 800 numbers you see on the TV about a free meter and testing supplies? They advertise a meter that you do not have to prick your finger. Does it require blood still? How does it work? My son is 13 and has CF related diabetes. He tests a couple of times a day and takes one shot of Lantus, long lasting insulin. This "honeymoon" period probably wont last much longer and he will need to test many more times and start taking another injection with meals. Im wanting to lessen the trauma of having to do this any way I can. Do not want to do the pump right now and really the pump may be a some time in the distant future.

There are the continuous testing strips that go with some pumps!!! They don't need constant pricking of fingers.

Most insurance companies won't cover them!

You only get free meter and test supplies from those companies that advertise on TV if you are on MEDICARE!!!

If your son pricks just off the side of the pad of finger it hurts much less. After a while you don't even notice if the little lancet point is like 31 guage and fairly fresh. When they get dull it hurts like the devil and makes a big hole! I forget to change my lancet point often enough.

Friends all over the internet tell me that the day they got their pump is the happiest day of their lives!! One insertion every 3 or so days compared to 4 to 6 injections per day!!! Testing is necessary, Carb counting is necessary, but the pump can be set to give less than half a unit of insulin!!! Do your son a huge favor and investigate the pumps!!! Especially if he is gonna have to stab himself multiple times daily!!

Trauma is having to inject multiple times a day, not pricking finger multiple times a day!!

CF is a nasty nasty disease by itself!! Prayers for your family.

I'm a diabetic too!
There is a meter than scans your finger. You just hold it on there and press a button and a light scans it. But unfortunately it isnt on the market yet. The 800 numbers for the "no pricking fingers" usually mean pricking your arm using a special blood tester. I recently bought a One Touch Ultra Smart and I LOVE IT! It keeps your log on there and tells you your averages and you can log when you exercise and eat and it guides you. It is PERFECT and has large buttons and everything. The blood tester is incredible...I barely feel a thing when I take my blood sugars. I love it! Check it out....

i saw one commercial in TV and they have this new thing that you can use instead of getting blood from fingers you can either use any part of your body. i thought that was pretty cool.
Go to any drugstore or supermarket like rite-aid or walmart i bet they will have it..

Yes there are. Go to your local pharmacy and speak with a pharmacists about the different models they carry. Some physician's don't care for them, so check with your doctor as well.

Yes, but they aren't as accurate as a prick would be. If you're diabetic, you need to know your blood sugar level. The only way to really know that is with a prick. (Like taking a Breathalyzer test for your BLOOD alcohol level).

In my opinion, the pump is a good solution once he gets in to middle school. Changing classes and having to interrupt them to test your blood and get yourself a shot can be irritating and disrupting.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Liberty Medical is the one on TV....800-986-1735 , but you can Google for ths info and get a lot of other listings.

Just google....Free blood test meter

A device that measures this accurately was under controlled clinical trials in the USA. This involves a sensor that is implanted under the skin with a connector coming out of the skin. You connect a small hand held meter to this to read at anytime you want.

I have no info on whether it has come to the market yet.

there are certain products out there that allow you to get blood from the forearm--supposed to be less painful.
in the meantime,be sure to alternate fingers- and try prickeng the side of the finger instead of the middle. That will help too.
if he will let you,try the earlobe, its virtually pain free and the reading won't differ. i am a nurse and some of our doctors recommened the earlobe for our patients who get frequent testing. i have never personally tried it on myself, but alot of my patients prefer it.
good luck to you and your son. and your doctor may have even better ideas on this topic.

Freestyle is good and you can test on the upper arm near the shoulder. There are less nerve endings there and it doesn't hurt. Test 2 hours after eating.
