Testing for Diabetes- revised question?!

Question: Some of you already answered this question but I reposted it with more detail. Thanks for the help!

I am going to the doctor to get tested for diabetes because of problems I have had with sugar in the past few years. I have no idea what to expect. Im going to ask the nurse when I call her today but I wanted to get answers from you all since you know first hand what the procedure is. Is there more than one type of test? Im not worried but would just like an idea of what to expect. Thanks bunches!

What I mean by having problems with sugar in the past is that I tend to get really sick by even drinking a coca cola. I feel really dizzy and my body goes into what is almost a convultion. I scared the crap out of my mom the other day when I went into one so we have decided to have me tested. I also found online that I have many of the symptoms of diabetes so it seems to me the best thing to do is to go get tested.

They will want a urine sample, a blood draw, and probably will want to do glucose tolerance!

It is easy, not painful (Phlebotomist - they who draw blood and test it). They apply tourniquet above elbow to make veins jump up so they can tap into them to get the needed blood in the quantity they need. Small prick most of the time.

GTT is the nasty one!! Have to drink syrup and be tested against how it reacts in your bod. Blood pricking again some more for several hours.

Urine Sample, just go to the rest room with the little vial and the nurses will give you instructions on how to proceed.

All of the above need to be done on fasting!! Like if your appointment is first thing in the morning for labs is best.

Good luck!! We don't want more members of our club, but you are welcome if we must welcome you!

I went to the doctor because I was showing signs of diabetes - extreme thirst and constantly peeing. They took a urine test and found sugar. I went for blood tests the next day and the day after I was diagnosed. That's all it really is. Your case might be special though, as everyone's different.
Good luck.

This is not answering your question. But, if it does turn out that you do have diabetes it can be 'cured' using diet and Homeopathy. Good luck

diabetes can not be cured, as someone has suggested, it can be controlled by drugs and diet, that is usually for type 2 diabetes, type 1 is usually treated by insulin injections, gud luck, hope you don't have it!

Sue is right on so I won't repeat what she has already said.

The one thing that she didn't mention is that OGTTs can vary in length of time...from one hour to five or more. You would have to stay in the doctor's office or hospital...wherever the test is performed. You will also have blood drawn several times.

My advice...choose the orange flavor glucose drink...it's the best tasting out of all of them...although none of them taste good. Orange is just the easiest one to get down...but it won't be easy, if you get my meaning. Drink it quickly, to get it over with.

Also, as one other poster has mentioned, there is no cure for any type of diabetes. It can be controlled and managed through medication, diet and exercise. Diabetics CAN reduce their dependency on medications and even POSSIBLY be able to stop taking them (not an option with type 1 but is with type 2) but they are still diabetic and must still treat themselves as one.

Please remember that I said "possibly"...this does not happen for many people.

Good luck and as Sue mentioned, if you are, welcome to the club.

EMT

test on your upper arm, it doesn't hurt.
