No. Cancer is a progressive disease which means it starts out very small (stage 1), grows larger (stage 2), begins to spread (stage 3), and grows, spreads and sends out metastatic cells (stage 4).
Treatment depends on the type of cancer and the stage of the disease as well as the overall health of the patient. So a stage 1 low grade tumor may easily be removed by surgery and no chemo or radiation recommended. However a stage 1 high grade tumor may be removed by surgery and than followed up by chemotherapy and radiation. A stage 3 or stage 4 cancer may begin with chemotherapy to determine whether the disease will respond to this type of treatment. If the cancer responds than the doctors will know they can use this type of chemo treatment after surgery to kill off any remaining microscopic cells.
Treatment for cancer primarily consists of chemotherapy, surgery and/or radiation . . . which can be used in any type of combination all during treatment for cancer. That is a long answer . . the short answer is that some types of cancer, especially those in the early stages do not need radiation or chemotherapy. And some cancers are not treated with radiation . . or surgery . . if the chemotherapy works. My son has never had radiation for his disease.
