If you have just been told that you should watch your sugar ....?!

Question: intake...what would be the best way to do this without changing EVERYTHING you eat, because groceries are expensive. It was recomended that a no-carb diet be used, but I cannot afford to do without my rice and potatoes.

You really don't need to change everything you eat. Just watch portions sizes. Try and choose foods with natural sugars, like fresh and dried fruits. Stay away from refind sugars, such as candy, cookies, cakes and regular soda. Check food lables, try to purchase lower or no sugar versions of things you normally purchase. You cannot survive on a "no carb" diet. Carbs are what provied our bodies with the energy we need to function through the day. Carbs are found in Fruits, Veggies, grains and cereals and in dairy products. If you try to go on a no carb diet, your only option are salad veggies like lettuce, radishes, onions, cucumber and meats. That would not be a healthy diet at all.

Rice and potatos are complex carbs, and healthy for you, depending on what you put on them, and how much you eat. Generally a serving size is equal to a handful. Try using Splenda whenever you can....in cooking and in your coffee. It really does taste just like sugar. I love making kool aid with it. I do a lot of baking too, especially for my friends. I have been replacing sugar with Splenda, and not a one has noticed anything different. If anything, everyone says that what ever I have made tastes better than it did when I was using regular sugar.

Choosing whole grain versions of what you normally buy is a good thing to do. Use brown rice instead of white. Use whole grain breads and pastas instead of enriched. They even make lower carb breads now, that taste pretty good. When it comes to dairy products, choose low fat or non fat.

I have been recently diagnosed with diabetes. I have had to try and change my diet. It's not easy, especially since I didn't really eat sugar to begin with. You can make whatever changes you need, if you do a little research. Maybe even talk to a nutritionalist or a dietician.

potatoes are bad. If you must have them, bake them or boil them, eat them plain, and always eat them with meat or another complex protein. If you have potatoes, don't eat bread.

I've found the easiest substitutions are:

Splenda or natural sugar substitutes for sugar
Brown rice for white rice
Yams or sweet potatoes for other potatoes
Whole Wheat bread for white bread.

You can find sugar free ice cream, candy and cookies as well. I haven't found these substutions to be too difficult to make.

Carbohydrate is the energy for your body and in your condition it should be taken moderate to low not fully eliminate carbohydrates.

FOR DIABETES: REMEMBER
-BALANCE DIET WITH LOW FAT, MODERATE PROTEIN, LOW CARB AND LOW SALT
- EXERCISE AT LEAST 30 MINS (DAILY- BEST OR 3TO5 TIMES A WEEK)
- IF ONE PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION: USE REGULARLY WHAT THE PHYSICIAN HAS ADVISED YOU.
Here is the rule for the diets in diabetic or obese person;
- Eat like a normal person (3 to 5 time, low serving frequent diet)
- Eat healthy (avoid any kind of fat, say NO TO FRIES)
- Avoid high Carbohydrate but don't fully eliminate and also avoid too much protein (effects kidney)
- Don't use too much salt (low salt diet is preferred)
- It is good to take multivitamins and minerals since diabetics are deficient in them

You need to take Calcium sources like green vegatables and milk products.
Fat should be in moderate amount. Best is zero transfat with non saturated fat with very less saturated fat.

Small frequent meals 3 to 5 times a day is always better than having 2 heavy meal.

Breakfast should be heavy. That is the most important meal of the day. It is good to take milk, cereals, whole wheat bread, butter (low fat) or jam,
egg (boiled is better), cutlet and sandwich (any)

Lunch should be 1/2 serving portion of green vegetables, 1/4 part meat product or high protein diet such as soya products or cereals, 1/4 Carb such as potato or pasta or rice.

Have lot of green salad and fruits (any but variety)
Avoid very oily food and high fat red meat.
Avoid candy, chocolate, Pop or soft drink (drink juice)

Dinner should be light and should be followed like lunch.

IF YOU FEEL HUNGRY IN BETWEEN, TRY TO FILL WITH WATER, THEN HAVE SOME SALAD WITH LOW FAT DRESSING. EVEN THAT YOU FEEL HUNGRY TRY SOME MILD SNACKS LOW FAT, LOW CARB

I know that you can afford to do without the rice and potatoes!! Much better than continuing to eat them and have to afford insulin and syringes!!!

A NO carb diet is not a good idea nor is it even remotely possible and maintain very good health.

Sugar is all carbohydrates which is in all plant foods! You just have to choose which ones you want to eat.

The best way to choose is still by testing the various foods:
At snack time, test your glucose.
eat a food, like one of your potatoes fixed however you like.
test your glucose again 90 minutes to 2 hours after the first testing.
Record all of this in a journal.
If the food causes your glucose to jump 50 points or more, you can choose to have less of it less often or delete it from your food plan.

Rices and potatoes are some of the highest sugar content available for eating. Carrots, dried beans, corn, peas are right up there too.

Try more dark green leafy salad things! I can deal nicely with tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers, etc on my salads as long as I watch how many of them I eat.

Be certain to get enough protein and fats to go along with your carbs as well. Balancing them 1/3 of each is good!
