What was this ailment?!

Question: When I was in the fifth grade, I developed this strange condition with my breathing. I would wake up in the middle of the night unable to breathe at all. My parents would rush me outside to get some air. I would try and take it in, but to no avail. And suddenly, when I did get some air into my passageway, I would vomit uncontrollably on the grass. Some nights I'd wake up gasping for air, and just empty mucus from my throat when I could intake the oxygen. None of the doctors I went to could prescribe any medicine for this. One of them did say that I had acid reflux. My parents immediately dismissed this notion. This problem went on for the greater portion of my 5th grade year. And then one morning it just stopped. I've never experienced it again.

What was this???????????

It does sound like asthma. Many asthmatics have sleep disturbances in which they wake gasping for breath. While yours was a bit more dramatic, the sign of mucus is a huge give away. A couple of other contributors have suggested that the cause might be sleep apnea, but I refute that assumption as apnea will not resolve, ever. However, asthma will temporarily resolve but you will still have the predisposition to airway sensitivity and may have symptoms yet again as you grow up. The vomiting that you had was most probably a result of anxiety brought on by your inability to breath.

Asthma

My hubby went thru this.
he finally went to the VA and he had sleep apnea.
