Question about diabetics and HGV licences?!

Question: I have a friend that is possibly going to have to go onto insulin for his diabetes. He is afraid his HGV licence will be removed if he has to have insulin. Does anyone know about this at all?

Unfortunately, insulin treated diabetes means automatic disqualification from the UK LGV licence.
All diabetes sufferers must inform the DVLA regardless of which licences they hold.
If his doctor is aware of his lgv/pcv licence ,he has a duty to inform the traffic commissioner.
If the driver continues to use his vocational licence knowing he suffers diabetes, then he is committing a criminal offence.

cant really answer yes or no sorry but i drive hgvs myself have medical this week which i have to have cos im over 40 now..i think the final decision will come down to the doctor because he will have to declare his diabetes on a medical form thats sent to the DVLA.im on medication myself and its not a prob.he might even have to have a medical at yearly intervals..hope this is some help.i can get you a number of DVLA enquires if you need it.my email is on my profile.good luck.

go to the dvla website /medical group
look up diabetics it will tell you all you need to know

hi my dad was a hgv driver then he got type 1 diabetes last year I'm sorry but yes they do take your licence away he had his removed because he might have a hypo when driving my dad was so upset when this happened

As I understand the situation, he will not be allowed to keep his HGV licence if he has to start taking insulin.

If he's not taking insulin yet, there are steps he can take to try to reduce his possible need for insulin, and thus keep his licence.

If he is overweight, he should try to lose some weight . Weight loss can make a great deal of difference to insulin resistance in the body and may reduce his need for insulin injections.

He should have a long hard look at his diet as honestly as possible. Obviously sweets, cakes and biscuits need to be kept to an absolute minimum, and the same goes for fatty foods (cheese, chips, crisps, pies).

He should also make sure he eats plenty of fruit and veg and gets plenty of exercise, because veggies and exercise have a very positive effect on blood glucose control.

I hope he manages to keep off the insulin.

I'm afraid I have to agree with others that have already told you your friend will, initially, lose his LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) licence. Having said that, my understanding is that once his diabetes is well controlled he will be able to reapply for a limited period licence. (I may not be correct on this, so it's best for your friend to contact the DVLA himself and speak to one of their representatives.)

Take a look at the sites I've listed below. The first one is probably going to be nearest the advice you seek.
