www.marrow.org will explain how a stem cell transplant is used instead of an old school bone marrow transplant as a possible cure to leukemias and lymphomas, with the eventual possibility of treating every other atuo immune disease.

THe methods used do not harm the donor at all (no embryonic, either adult, or cord blood - the cord blood and placenta donated after a healthy birth) and show a lot of promise. I myself just went through such transplant using cord blood (which was, by the way, paid for by the tax dollars of the American working public).

midnights answer is very good. I would just like to add that stem cell transplants are also used for solid tumor cancers (even if they are not in the bone marrow) For example people with agressive solid tumor cancers under go extremely intensive chemo to eliminate their body of cancer, because the chemo is so strong their bodys would not be able to recover they have the stem cells transplanted into their bodys to be able to recover from the extremely high doses of chemo they have been given. When theses people use their own cells to "rescue them" it is called and autologous stem cell transplant. So the stem cell transplant is widley used with leukemias and lymphomas but is also now being used with solid tumor cancers.
