Chances of muscaular dystrophy through first cousin marriage?!


Question: My parents are first cousins.... and two of my dad's sisters have muscular dystrophy... is there a cahnce when I grow up I will have muscular dystrophy? By the way, I'm a boy and 13 years old.

There is a chance. I'm pretty sure muscular dystrophy is a recessive gene--you need to inherit it from both parents for it to manifest. Have either of your parents been diagnosed? Even if not, they could be carriers. I'm also pretty sure it's a sex-linked gene. You're male, so you received an x-chromosome from your mother, and a y-chromosome from your father. If your mother has muscular dystrophy (two x-genes with the MD gene) or is a carrier (one x-gene with the MD gene and one without), she could pass it on to you. If your father has it, I don't think he can pass it onto you, because it's linked to his x-gene, and he gave you a y-gene.

There is a chance you could have it, but also not. There are some variables. You could get a genetic test. Don't know much about those myself, but talk to your doctor and/or your parents. Hope this is accurate!
