Corn Allergy?!

Question: My son is allergic to corn. I was just wondering does that also mean he is allergic to high fructose corn syrup and corn starch?

Probably. I'm allergic to corn and that means corn syrup and corn starch. Generally, a corn allergy isn't life threatening, however, which is the good news. For most people it causes hives and gastrointestinal problems (diarrhea, stomach upset, etc.). I still eat corn sometimes; I just know I'm going to pay for it later and have figured out which corn is worse for me. (Corn syrup is the worst for me, followed by regular corn...sometimes I can get away with corn starch). The annoying thing to watch for is there is corn in everything...bread, processed foods, drinks, etc. There are some whole grain breads that don't have corn syrup. Also, look for organics as they tend to stay away from corn syrup and such. Just remember to read all the ingredients on all the labels. It's annoying, but it's a must. Unless his corn allergy is lifethreatening (which the doc should have told you), an EpiPen isn't necessary.

I would imagine so, since they are products of corn. Just like people that are allergic to peanuts are allergic to peanut oil.

you really need to schedule another appointment with the allergist and get your questions answered. write them down so that you don't forget. carry an Epi-pen and Benedryl with you at all times. take a CPR class and ask the doctor if there's a parent support group for children with food allergies. look up FAAN online.
