Can poorly controlled diabetes effect your period?!

Question: Can poorly controlled diabetes effect your period?

Over the last few months ive let the control of my diabetes slip, im insulin dependant, some times forget to inject, im a full time mum so very busy as they are all under 5, been diabetic 14 yrs now and this is the 1st time ive let this happen.

The main reason for my question is that my periods are as regular as clock work but im a week late, i have the IUD (coil) fitted and this has never stopped them, trying to rule this out before i go and buy a HPT.

Any advice would be great, many thanks

yes i am sorry to say poorly controled diabetes can affect your monthly cycle and i am guilty of doing the same thing with missing doses of insulin. when your children are under five you give them priority and it is easy to miss doses of insulin and to eat properly. But as i have said to others and have been reminded of this myself, if you dont look after yourself you cant look after others very well either. and im not saying your a bad parent no i wouldnt dream of doing that but your diabetes has to be a major consideration when you have children, and all forms of contraception can fail except abstaination. talk to your gp or diabetes nurse/practioner about your options of what insulin to take as there is an insulin you can take that you inject twice daily. There are many other solutions to your diabetes control but you have to let your health professionals know you are having trouble. See your gp at your earliest convieniance and get a pregnancy test done. then take things one step at a time.

I may sound a little harsh but i only say this as i know i have been there with this and our children mean so much to us, that we have to make sure we are well enough to cope.
I really wish you well and hope you will get through this. and i really do send my love.

It can cause many different situations, some more severe then others. Do a pregnancy test, of course. And please, for the sake of your children, take care of your diabetes correctly. You will not do them much good, blind, or dead.

Maybe, even depression can effect your period.
