Allergic to silver necklace?!

Question: s it possible I am allergic to a silver necklace? I never wear small metal necklaces, but my bf bought me a pretty solid heart necklace from Tiffany's, but everytime I wear it my throught tightens up more and more throughout the day. I didn't really connect the two until today when I was wearing the necklace and the same thing happened! I thought it was from some earrings I was wearing before (maybe allergy, mixed metal from Chanel), but I didn't wear the earrings since I am thinking I am allergic to them since they keep making my ears bleed (i am not doing anything to make them bleed!).

I have silver bracelets from Tiffany, and no problem, but this is my first "metal" necklace, and maybe because it is so close to my head it is causing a resperatory allergy? I just got an inhaler from the doctor because I have had trouble breathing and have had a sore throat, but it all cleared up once I stopped wearing the necklace, but not all the symptoms are coming back again.

That is a bit of a puzzler. Normally an allergic reaction to metal presents as a rash, not as anaphalaxis-(how ever that is spelled.) The most frequent allergic reaction occurs when people touch nickel.

Is it possible that the necklace is silver plated, versus sterling silver? If so then I would guess that the base metal of the necklace contains nickel. Also, is the necklace made from the new non-tarnish silver which is called Argentinium? (Argentinium also contains nickel.)

Please do check with your physician. Perhaps a battery of allergy tests is in order. Anything that affects your breathing is serious.

u r allergic to silver?!!?

Most metal allergies are from nickel and chromium and you would get contact dermatitis. You can get a patch test for nickel and chromium from a dermatologist. Silver should be okay, although 10 and 14k gold contains both if these alloys as does white gold. 18k gold is fine as is platinum and titanium. (perhaps its a lubricant used on the silver for cleaning)

Hello Crystal,
You are talking about two different types of allergies here. Your respiratory allergy (hyper reactive bronchi or asthma) required an inhaler (beta-mimetiques of some sort or cortisone). The second one is a totally different allergy. It is a type IV or slow allergy that is manifested by eczema or topical dermatitis. In your case it is probably provoked by nickel. The nickel does not cause respiratory allergy (asthma). I suggest that you avoid any metal jewelry (including watch) and use your inhaler as prescribed by your doctor.
Take care,
Neli
