Question about MRSA?!

Question: I'm watching my nephew while my sister is on vacation. His Dr. just called to say he tested positive for MRSA. Should I let his school know? I looked at the info on the CDC website, but it didn't have a huge amount of info.

Yes.

Your sister may need to give permission, though.

Many people walk around with MRSA and do not infect others. Don't freak over it.

Hand hygiene....I feel like a broken record, but honestly people- there's a lot to do to preven infection!

yes-tell the school

I think you have to let the school know. Why don't you ask the doctor

no i dont think that the school would need that info

you should DEFINITELY let the school know. Its very contagious and other kids may need to be tested now too. I'm glad he's been to the doctor and can be properly treated.

I'm a nursing major and I know that when I have a pt with MRSA we put them in isolation, but that's hospital protocal. I would let the school know, where does he have the MRSA?

well since it is a reportable disease that the Dr will have to inform the CDC about you should also inform the school!!! USe a lot a lot of hand sanitizer and bleach or lysol everything he some into contact with! good luck

MRSA could get very dangerouse if the kid gets sick, even a cold or influenza will be enough and MRSA could kill someone. People usually get it from Hospitals, I just heared an interview with a doctor on the Radio two days ago abour MRSA and how dangerour can it be and that every 5 patient is being killed br MRSA. Call his doctor and ask for advise!

well my son has had a staff infection and it's highly contagious and I researched it and asked the DR's a whole lot of questions. staff is on everyone's skin. Once you've had a staff infection, it never really goes away. the boils will, but you'll always have the infection and probably get boils again sometime in the future. does he have to take an oral antibiotic and the cream 3 times a day? I think he should stay home from school at least until all the boils go away b/c the puss from that makes it easy for someone else to catch it. after they heal, he really should be ok. does that help? Or he could wear clothes that covers them and be real careful to keep up with his hygiene.

I don't mean to alarm you but...ASK THE DR. This is so highly contagious. How old is the nephew? Are you charged with the care of his infection? Pick that Drs' brain and find out everything you can about it. Also ask about the drugs he will use on the child. Get a list from the pharmacy of the precautions and side affects of the drugs. Of course they should be putting him on one of the few drugs that is effective against MRSA. Check it out again witht he pharmacy. Be diligent to watch for a flare up and get him to the Dr. quick if that happens. It can get bad in just a few hours.

Most people have MRSA on their skins and it causes no problem until they have a skin lession of any kind. Then it can get serious fast. Those are the ones who are at risk.

I know it can go thru a locker room like wildfire.
Be careful yourself. Make sure you take the precautions necessary to be sterile and sanitary. Dispose of dressings properly.

Yes, I would think it would be wise to let them know. MRSA can spread to others so they will also probably want you to keep your nephew at home. The doctor should have started him on some strong antibiotics right away. The MRSA can be killed by certain medications and if not, the MRSA can be very deadly. The treatment needs to be aggressive and I would think without delay. If the doctor said nothing about any medicine, you need to call him back and request either 30 days worth of Bactrim or some equivalent to it. I had the MRSA and that is what they gave to me in order to knock it out. I don't mean to sound like a raving maniac here, but this could save your nephew's life. I am being quite serious here. I was in isolation in the hospital for nearly an entire month with the MRSA and almost died. Please act on this immediately!

My friends daughter has mrsa and the doctor is not making a big dreal of it at all. She has not told the school, the doc said she didnt have to, because it does not need to be reported to public health. My aunt is the public health nurse in our city and doctors do not have to report mrsa.
