Skin problems!?!

Question: My friend has psoriasis.
He has been prescribed some medication, but still has psoriasis.
Is there anything that he can eat or anything he can do to get rid of or reduce his psoriasis without medication?

I've had Psoriasis since I was 3 years old and now I'm 32. I use to have it worse when I was younger. It seems as I got older, some of it went away. Not totally though. I'm still covered at least 80% of my body. Tell your friend to continue using the medications that was prescribed to him. Stress could cause flare-ups and possibly certain foods. Have your friend keep a record of foods he eats and see if his psoriasis act up and if they do, keep away from that food. Good Luck!

Psoriasis isn't very well understood, and unfortunately there aren't currently any "cures" for it, only medications to help relieve the symptoms. Stress & alcohol use may increase flare-ups. Sometimes people use tanning beds but that should only be done under the direction of a physician since we all know tanning beds come with their own risks as well. Keeping his skin clean & well moisturized will help prevent flare-ups, as well as keeping his nails trimmed. He can remove crusts by moistening them with lotion & then peeling them off but he has to be really careful not to cause further irritation doing that. Sometimes doctors will try combinations of treatments if the initial one doesn't work - I would encourage him to stick with that first and do everything he can to prevent more flare-ups in the meantime. Good luck!

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease. So if you have it, you have it for life. You can't get rid of it that's a fact your friend should realize. He will have it for the rest of his life. You can't get rid of it but you can manage it & live a healthy, normal life. It's like Asthma, if you have it you don't really outgrow it (like some people think). But if it is managed properly then your life can be as normal as anybody without the disease. Controlling the "flare-ups" of psoriasis are important in managing this disease. Skin lesions of psoariasis are usually triggered by stress, exposure to sun, trauma to the skin, etc. So controlling these factors will help reduce "flare-ups". Some doctors recommend UV light treatment. So your friend should consult a good doctor, preferably an Internist or a Rheumatologist. I hope this helps. -dennisMD
