Possibly Diabetes?!

Question: Today I went to the doctor because I have a bladder infection. [Trust me, it sounds so much worse than it really is] Well, I had to pee in a cup, and the doctor called today and said that they found sugar in my urine. They then said that I needed to have blood taken so they could see if it was in my blood as well.
If the sugar would be in my blood, does that mean I have diabetes? More information about diabetes would be appreciated. I researched it on the internet, but just simple facts would help.
Thanks

Sugar in the urine (glucosuria) can have a number of causes. The doc will want to test your blood sugar because diabetes is one cause of glucosuria which needs to be treated, the sooner the better.

It can also be caused by the infection itself or by materials at the opening of the urethra (the tube that goes from the bladder to the outside) that gets into the urine when you pee. More than once I have done a blood test on a patient and found they had normal blood sugars despite the presence of urinary glucose.... but I have always tested. It's important to rule out diabetes as the cause.

Diabetes itself is very treatable, the most common form is treated with oral meds (pills), being more careful about your diet, and exercise ("type 2 diabetes").

I'd get your blood tested before losing any more sleep over it.

Your Dr probably just wants to follow up on the sugar in your urine to rule out diabetes. People with diabetes will spill sugar into their urine esp with a bladder/kidney infection. Take a deep breath and talk with your Dr. He/she will be able to give you more info and insight on your condition than any of us can.

If you have sugar in your urine, you may have diabetes. Your blood normally has sugar in it. But depending on how much sugar there is in your blood, you might have diabetes. They sometimes measure "random glucose" or "fasting glucose"

Go back and check with your doctor. Usually it is keytones that are found in your urine that indicate if you have diabetes.
There are a couple of different ways to monitor yourself for diabetes... one have a fasting glucose check done... you can do part of that yourself. Get a glucose monitor or even go to a local fire department or EMS service and have them check your glucose before you eat or drink anything for breakfast. Then have your doctor order lab work and they will draw blood and do a more extensive check. Follow your glucose levels throughout the day checking it periodically before lunch and after lunch... before snacks and after snacks... etc.
An average glucose level for most people is 70 to 120. I have seen people with levels as low as 43 and still talking somewhat normal and I have seen levels around 60 and they don't make any since at all. I have seen also levels as high as 500+ and talking normal and levels of 300+ and they can't function. So keep in mind that each person is a little different and what is normal for you may not be normal for someone else. Follow what your doctor says!!!
