Do you have faith in the medical profession?!

Question: I'm thinking that medical advice for a healthy lifestyle is in constant change. There are many examples of the latest research results, and today (Jan 16 '08) I'm thinking of a branc new directive, indicating that extra calcium is great for bones in older women BUT it increases the chances of a heart attack.

Hmmmmm... maybe it'd be better to break a leg than to suddenly die of heart failure, I dunno.

unfortunately doctors ( of course not all of them!!!)in america dont care about their patients. they care about money. sometimes it takes yrs for sick people to have Right diagnose. dr. gives pills to everyone, well if that pill won't work they gladly give u a different one and so on...it almost impossible to find a dr. who would really care to help u, not just to find what is wrond, but also to give u the right treatment. if u go to er, be ready to spend at least few hrs till u see a dr. then they gonna give as much tests as they can, find nothing, send u home w/painkillers and tell u to see a regular dr. it's a circle...instead of wasting all money on war in iraq, our goverment should help their own people. give more money on research, make medicine more affordable...give free dental insurance ( even with insurance i cannot afford to go to dentists, have to go to europe to fix my teeth. keep an insurance only for emergencies).

I don't think they know all that much. I mean.. I think they are great in emergency situations and trained to fix immediate problems, but not so much on just day to day living.

I saw an interview with a woman that was over a hundred years old. When they asked her secret, she said to stay as far away from doctors as possible. lol

no esp. not americas. we have to pay for medical attention. and they always have drugs out there that have worse side affects than what u have. like a simple sleep aid, may cure your insomnia but you get constipation, heart failure, poor circulation or w/e and yeah i would rather stay up all night than have the rest of that. but its because they sell one thing and then when u get the side affects, then u have to buy another pill and then those side affects cause you to buy another pill. there real goal is to just make as much money as possible. its not for your health its for the money, like this war its not to rid of terrorist its to pretty much 'own" iraq and get oil. america is so f-ed up!

No. Not so long as the 'doctors' continue to TREAT disease rather than CURE it.

IMO, there are and have been cures for many if not all of our most common ailments but there is no money in the elimination of disease, only in its +treatment+

Well I trust my Doctor. He is very thorough, talks in a way I can understand, explains the results of my physicals in detail and has never prescribed me anything I didn't need, which amounts to antibiotics for an infection - once in 10 years.
I have been to Dr.'s who treat their patients as though the are idiots and never explain anything just pull out the old presciption pad. I had one Dr. (who I thought was an ***) give me 2 prescriptions. One was for a drug that wasn't available anymore and the other was a powerful anti-psychotic and the pharmacist couldn't believe I was getting it to treat depression and insomnia informing me they were many newer drugs on the market with less side effects and proven more effective. I took the prescription back, ripped it up and found myself another Dr.

No, I don't have faith in the medical profession and I've been a nurse for 28 years....that's hilarious isn't it?
There are a lot of really great new things out there...but as far as opinions on this and opinions on that, there are way too many conflicting reports..
The computer and the library are still really great tools of research...and I always try to arm myself with as much knowledge as I can about anything...whether its for myself or my patient....
Modern medicine has certainly come a long way...but you still have to do the research..
What I think is one of the problems out there is that the doctors DON'T LISTEN to either the patient and/or sometimes the nurse....they've got this "doctor","I'm the boss" mentality and there you go...

Can you site the work that says increased calcium increases the risk for heart attack? That doesn't make sense.

Are you sure it isn't in reference to estrogen replacement?

I once read that calcium causes cholesterol to stick more. Like everything, take it in moderation.
