Question: I sometimes get cold sores in my mouth and my girlfriend and i are scared to have oral sex because of it. What are the risks of her getting herpes in her vagina if i go down on her? I heard if they are not visible and i dont have an open sore its ok but im not sure? ! someone have any suggestions.

What you heard is not exactly true. Yes, you are definitely contagious when you have sores. Most of the time you are safe if you are not having sores, but this isn't guaranteed. You are contagious for a few days before sores develop, so even if you don't see them, you could pass on the virus. Also, most people with herpes shed the virus from time to time, as much as 20% of the time, without having actual sores. You can never be sure when this will be, so you can never be 100% safe.

If you want to engage in oral sex, you can take precautions:
use a dental dam, engage only when you don't have sores, take an antiviral preventative, take antiviral supplements such as lysine and zinc, and stay in good health.

If your girlfriend did develop type 1 "oral" herpes in her vaginal area, it usually isn't as severe as type 2 "genital" herpes and the outbreaks are less frequent.
