How did you know you had diabetes?!

Question: I want to hear from diabetics how you suspected you had diabetes.

What was your symptoms?
Did you leave it too late?
How old were you?
Did you know the symptoms were of diabetes?
Anything else?

I want to know this because I have been just diagonised with diabetes and I'm just learning more about it.

I had a really bad cold for 4 weeks in October- it was very unusual for me seeing as I'm often over colds in about 2 days. After the cold I started peeing a lot and craving water. i'd go through a 1L bottle of water 4-5 times a day and I'd be peeing like mad! I lost weight too, 7 pounds in 2 months, which is a lot for me considering I only weigh about 130 to begin with.

I was diagnosed in December so the doctors thought I had been living with diabetes for probably a month and a bit
I was 17 years old

One day my friend and I were talking about how much I peed all the time (this was back in November) and she jokingly said "Oh maybe you have diabetes, my dog does and she pees all the time." That statement stuck in my head, I went to the internet, looked up symptoms and basically matched every single one. I didn't get checked by a doctor till December though, I guess I was kinda afraid to know the truth

It'll be a month January 24 that I've been living with type 1 diabetes. It's hard, especially since I'm the first in my family to have it, I don't really have anyone to relate too. My boyfriend is really sweet though, his grandmother had diabetes so he knows the whole drill.

You'll find you'll go through a whole bunch of stages - shock, denial, depression, acceptance, anger, and then all over again. I find days still where I just feel like bawling my eyes out, or other days where I'm like "why me?". It doesn't make you any less of a person, trust me, I'm still on this crazy emotional roller-coaster and I'm barely a month in!

Just take 'er easy and surround yourself with rescources, use the internet, books, anything, educate yourself! Life goes on, think about my position, I'm in first year engineering, as if that wasn't enough of a challenge! Now this!

My symptoms were being thirsty too much, being hungry often, and feeling sleepy all the time. I was only 12 when i was diagnosed, and yes i knew the symptoms because my mom is diabetic as well so she told me alot about it. I would sometimes feel dizzy and with no energy, stay away from rice, bread, and all that junk, its for your own good.

As a child of 11 yrs old, I started to lose weight, was excessively thirsty, urinated therefor a lot, felt weak/fatigued. My Mom phoned the local dr and was asked the question of diabetes in the family. She responded negatively, but searched the word diabetes to find out it ment sugar disease. Type 2's symptoms are not as pronounced as with Type 1. Only at levels higher than 11mmol/L do you normally show symptoms. Normally dry mouth and feeling more tired after mealtimes can be indications of blood sugar irregularities.

i was wetting the bed...very thirsty
actually i dnt leave it too late..i dnt have a seasur or anything
i was three and a half(13 now)
actuall my grandma's sis found out and told my grandparents and then my grandpa checkd my sugar with his meter...hes type 2
im on lantis and log right now and aiming for a pump...a few ppl in my school have diabetes...whats weird is i want to be a pastry chef when i grow up..(its weird cause thats the 1 thing im not supposed to be eating and stuff...sugar)...i hated diabetes soo much when i was dignosed...(well i dnt really kno what it was) but when i did kno much moe about it when i got older its gottin harder..i actually hid behind my counch when my grandpa told me i had diabetes and i needed to go to the hospital......i dnt remember anything but me hideing behind the counch thats the only memory i really have

My eye doctor picked up on it when he couldn't stabilize a glasses prescription. My regular doctor had not checked blood sugar for 2 physicals. I had bad lower leg itch for 2 years and found out later that the leg itch is a symptom. I am hyperglycemia

I was losing weight quickly and drinking lots and urinating lots so my mom scheduled me an appointment. I thought it was nothing, no history of diabetes in the family, I didn't even really know what diabetes was, then I went to the appointment and the doctor thought everything was okay but he still had me take a urinalysis (I had to drive home on a friday from school (Texas A&M) for this appointment) and by the time I got home the lab results were in and he called us and wanted me to come take more tests. I thought it was silly, cause of course there was sugar in my urine...i had had a bunch of sodas and sonic drinks and stuff that day cause i was travelling. I got there and my family doctor (great guy) had the lab techs stay late to run some tests on me cause the sugar in my urine concerned him. I got a standard fingerprick test first (i believe they had other tests planned but that's all they needed). When it read 511 all the lab techs were shocked and retested since I felt fine and wasn't acidotic. When the same result came back again my doctor took me in to his office and told me about diabetes and that i for sure had it...he made some calls and 10 mins later I was in a bed in the ER (no waiting room). They got me stabilized and basically that weekend I got a crash course in diabetes and giving insulin and counting carbs. I missed classes on Monday but made it back on Tuesday and have been going to school and living with it since. It was hard that first night but since I've just adjusted and gotten used to it. I was 18 at the time, that was about 3 months ago that I was diagnosed. Here at school I have an amazing friend who has really helped, as soon as he heard he pledged to go to the gym 3 times a week with me (since excercise is so important). This is a long story but everyones is. I hope you are managing well and if you have ANY questions don't hesitate to ask. I know I was thrown away from my doctor and everyone pretty quickly to get back to school so it really helped me cause one of my friends was diabetic so I would ask her questions when they came up. Hope this helps.

My brother who is very close to me has type 1 Diabetes, it was kind of funny, he had testicular pain, (he actually had appendicitis) they also found out he had diabetes! He is regualing now, he is okay!
