Second hand smoke v/s welding smoke.?!

Question: A report tonight on my local news (WAVY TV 10 in Norfolk Va.) aired a story about one of our cities banning smoking, and a woman, whose husband was a shipyard welder for 20 years, who never smoked, died of lung cancer last year. This was used as an example of why smoking in public places should be banned. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not arguing for smoking, smoking killed my dad 2 years ago. My whole point is, if a person is exposed to known carcinogens daily for 20 years(welding smoke from arc welding contains known carcinogens, every can of welding rods has the warning listed) doesn't it stand to reason that if his cancer was anything but ideopathic, he got it from welding smoke, not 2nd hand smoke that he may have been exposed to for maybe 3 hours a week, v/s minimum 40 hours a week exposed to cacinogenic gasses emitted from welding? I called the TV news desk to inform them of this, they simply don't care.

tonight the news told me to drink beer because its good for me, last week they told me it causes cancer too.

Every single study or story they have changes what they think. sorry about your dad, my pops is fighting cancer right now

Well, smoking is not the only cause of lung cancer, by far, and what the news said was nothing more than political propoganda by those trying to ban smoking.

However, 2nd hand smoke is dangerous and there are real reasons to ban smoking indoors.

I am an ex smoker, but I only quit this past spring and it was only because of health reasons. I have said the same things I am getting ready to say for years.

Cig smoke smells incredibly nasty. How many non smokers really want to smell like that?

While not that many people are truly allergic, MOST non smokers have breathing issues with smoke. I myself can no longer breathe in a room with one smoker, much less a whole room full. I prefer to eat my meal or have my drink while being able to breathe.

Anyone who is asthmatic will have attack by being around the smoke (any type of smoke actually). And yes thats true, my step dad is asthmatic, and I see it happen all the time with him.

What about the people who have serious health problems? There are people on o2 that go out to eat and shop just like the rest of us. They cant breathe anyways, Im sure they would like to eat their meal without breathing cig smoke.

And finally, if you are around any kind of smoke long enough, cig, wood, welding, even mj, you will develope copd if not cancer. The tar that is in all smoke sets up in the lung causing all forms of copd.

The news doesnt care because they know lung cancer is caused by a great number of things. They also know that lung is not the only cancer smoking causes. Not widely known, but my cancer, leukemia, was possibly caused by smoking.. my own for 10 years, combined with the second hand smoke of all the adults in my family for as long as I can remember (I started at 13, diagnosed at 21, quit smoking this past spring at 23).
