What does everyone think about flu shots and other such live vaccines?!

Question: What are some of the side effects and symptoms to taking the said shots?, for example my biological father says he's not been to a doctor since a child and will not take the flu shot if it was offered to him, free or otherwise.

I am more on the opposite, I believe anything offered medical for free, well, I jump on it.

..but ultimately is it safe and would you recommend it?

There are two types of flu shots out there...

The side effects of the "flu-shot" are generally limited to arm soreness, and the vanishingly rare serious side effects (allergic response, neurologic issues). An individual is much more likely to have life threatening illness due to flu than due to the vaccine.

To clarify, the flu shot you take in the arm is NOT A "LIVE VACCINE"!

The only live vaccine for flu that is currently available is Flumist, it is administered in your nose (intranasally). This is a "live attenuated virus" which means that it is a living virus that is weakened by laboratory manipulation. The side effects with this vaccine are that you may feel as though you have a cold.

Flumist is ONLY indicated for healthy people between the ages of 2 years and 49 years, since many of the people who need protection from flu do not qualify for Flumist, they opt for the killed virus shot in the arm.

I would recommend a killed flu shot to everyone, but especially if they are very young or very old. The flu very often causes serious or life threatening disease, and we have an excellent inexpensive vaccine that works. Use it.

Technically I do not know for sure if flu shots really help one not get the flu. I do know that I've been getting them for the past several years and I have not had the flu. When you have the flu and it's really the flu, it sucks. I'm not talking a bad cold. That can make you miserable. The flu can make you feel very week. Anyway, if it is all psychological or if I've just been lucky, I will still continue to get the shot every year.

Unless you are high risk or spend allot of time around people who are I don't think the flu shot is necessary

I've been getting the flu shot for about 7 yrs now.....have had no side effects and not even a cold during the winter season....I would recommend it as the flu's seem to be getting more powerful and lasting longer and full recovery can be month before your strength comes back to normal
