Fibromyalgia and Melatonin?!


Question: I'm 21 years old, and I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia Syndrome in June of 2006. I've tried just about everything for pain, including, but not limited to: Percocet, Celebrex, Vicodin, Naproxyn, Nortriptyline, Relafin, Flexeril, and others that I'm just too exhausted to name. I realize now that covering the pain when I'm losing sleep isn't really helping. I tend to wake up from about 3-8 times a night, depending. I find that when I'm sleeping at my boyfriend's house, I sleep a lot easier, because he rubs my back before I go to sleep...but I can't expect that everynight. So I'm wondering has anyone tried a melatonin supplement, and how has that worked for you? I tried it once when I was attending college, and found that it made me over sleep. Now that I'm no longer in school, and my job is later in the day, do you think I'd be ok with taking it? I no longer see my specialist, as I think he's an idiot, and am trying self-care.

If melatonin helped you sleep the time you tried it, I'd take it again (I actually do take it). It affects different people in different ways - some oversleep the next a.m., others feel groggy all the next day, some have no effects from it whatsoever, and others do beautifully on it. It doesn't make me sleepy the following day but I do build up a resistance to it, so I end up just increasing my bedtime dosage and sometimes taking more during the night when I awaken. You might try taking it earlier in the evening, taking half of a tablet, or whatever else you can think of. I also take Tylenol PM with it, as well as prescription pain meds.

BTW, I've recently started taking Lyrica for the fibromyalgia; having great results. I also take hydrocodone for the pains. I try to take one at bedtime but even so, like you, a massage helps.

You have ACTUALLY had a diagnosis of fibromyalgia and you are worrying about taking a melatonin tab? Isn't that like worrying about your hair when the Titanic is going down? I'd be eating bacon sandwiches and martinis if I were you.

I would take an anticonvulsant like lyrica or neurontin. For fatigue, I would add a small dose of wellbutrin in the morning. 150mg Too much and you won't sleep at night.

melatonin usually helps me. i take it with valerian root which is a really smelly natural supplement that wont really help you fall asleep but it helps to have more restful sleep with less interruptions so when they work together melatonin and valerian work a lot better than the prescription stuff my doctor gave me, and i dont notice feeling any more tired than i usually do in the morning or throughout the next day
