Mouth cancer??!

Question: Can chewing on your cheek cause mouth cancer?? I overheard a friend and her dad talking and he said thats what caused her moms mouth cancer and she'd probably get it if she didn't stop chewing on her cheek... I don't think I believe that... but I wanted some other peoples opinion on it & if anyone had any "evidence" on it that would be great. Thanks!

Most oral cancers are due to long-term smoking and alcohol use. Less commonly, viruses such as Epstein-Barr, herpes simplex, and HIV can lead to certain forms of cancer. Other causes include family history, chemical exposure, radiation, high levels of dietary nitrites (food preservative), and chewing Betel nuts (in Asia). While there have been reports of cancer due to chronic irritation due to poorly fitting dentures/dental prostheses, evidence for this has been poor in patients who don't smoke/drink. Therefore, chewing one's cheek is unlikely to cause mouth cancer.

depends on what you eat

Yes it could, but this is a small chance. Any type of irritation can cause any tissue to become mutogenic. But the incidence is small.
