My son is two and might show signs autism how do you really if they have it?!

Question: My son is three and we are in the process of getting a diagnosis for an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

First thing you should do is NOT PANIC. There is such a range on the Autism Spectrum .

I'll direct you to some resources and hope you can find some help. It's difficult to find info on toddlers with an ASD, but the info is out there.

Parentbooks.ca has an entire section on Autism and Aspergers

Google Autism toddler, or autism and your local city... You may be surprised by the number of resources available.

Take your child to your doc and request a developmental assessment. Don't take no for an answer, you are your child's only advocate in a system that isn't always easy to maneuver through.

My familiy doc had never heard of ASD in children who were 3, but our local Aspergers/Autism treatment center certainly had.

Reasons to be concerned would include inappropriate social play for the child's age, difficulty making or keeping eye contact, failure to ask questions typical for the child's age group, failure to form sentences in a typical way for your child's age. Anything which includes any sort of developmental delay is worth investigating.

I learned through my daughter's mental illness that the best thing you can do for your child is be proactive and advocate with the professionals you encounter, be they teachers, doctors or therapists.

My son is also hyperlexic (obsession with letters and numbers, with learning to spell words etc)

All children have their own set of struggles and their own set of beautiful traits, and I wouldn't change my son for the world.

Best of luck to you.

there are centers where it is diagnosed, my sister worked at one, i think they just watch the kid play and give him a series of stuff to do and then they can diagnose him. research the web for one near you.

Talk to his doctor about it, they can help you begin the process to have him evaluated. Even if he isn't diagnosed, he can get services for speech, OT, or PT if needed. He can also be watched and re-evaluated every 6 months to follow his progress.

There are signs and symptoms to watch for. Eye Contact, Repetitive behavior called stemming, hand flapping or toe walking. Does not respond when name is called. Does not like to be held or seems to be in his own world.
Check www.tacanow.org
They have a great group with lots of resources.

Another good site to check out is www.generationrescue.org
Good Luck.

The key is to communicate with your pediatrician, hopfully he can guide youn through this. Get a referral to have him evaluated I did at The children's hopital, it takes a while so the sooner you start the process the better. good luck!
