I was just diagnosed with emphysema...?!

Question: ...and I'm really scared. I know what it is but do I need to take medication for the rest of my life? Can I still have a baby? Am I going to die? Can I still live a normal life? I'm going to my doctor tomorrow to follow up from my ER visit last night but until then I'd like some answers. I'm only 29 years old! Anyone out there that can answer these questions and offer support?? Thanks SO much!

Emphysema can and may complicate thing. Yes you can still have a baby assuming you have no other medical issues. You may be on medications the rest of your life and as you get older, you may need extra oxygen. You will need pulmonary function tests at least once per year to monitor your lung status.

The best thing you can do is to stop smoking (assuming you do) and stay away from second hand smoke. The next best thing is to get in shape. A fit body will work more efficiently and you will be able to maintain some what of a normal life even with the emphysema. We have an exercise program for emphysema patients to increase their endurance and help them with daily activities while having the minimal amount of shortness of breath.

The next thing I would say is ask your doctor if you may have an Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1). This is a genetic disorder that will appear as COPD (emphysema) in young adults like yourself. If you haven't been tested you can be FOR FREE by calling this number 1-877-886-2383. The test is free and confidential. This is sponsored by the Alpha 1foundation.

unfortunatly you cannot have a baby....... but stay on top of your medicine and go to all of your doctors appointments. i wish the best for you and GOD BLESS.

emphysema at 29?? are you the worlds heaviest smoker? or have you a complex respiratory history not mentioned? maybe the diagnosis was from an x-ray? you really need something like spirometry testing (often done at gp surgery) to measure your breathing in order to diagnose emphysema. also you don't mention that you have any symptoms...? if you feel well then focus on that until you speak more with your dr, and ask about breathin tests like spirometry.
