Chlamydia, can it be misdiagnosed?!

Question: Is it possible to be misdiagnosed for chlamydia?

Could it possibly be mistaken for something else, such as a urinary infection?
Are there any at-home tests for the STD?

When symptoms do appear in women with this disease they may be mild and include a yellowish vaginal discharge; painful or frequent urination; burning or itching of the vaginal area; redness, swelling, or soreness of the vulva; painful sex; and abnormal bleeding. Men who are infected may notice a discharge from the penis or pain and burning during urination.

Diagnosis of chlamydia is made through self-observation, medical history, and physical examination which includes taking a sample of cervical tissue with a cotton swab and sending it to a laboratory for diagnosis. Researchers are working on the development of a urine test which will make screening for this disease more accessible.
Sexual partners within the last sixty days must also be screened whenever chlamydia is diagnosed.

Antibiotics are used to treat chlamydia.

Yes it can be misdiagnosed. More often then what the laboratories personnel will ever admit the samples can get mix up with someone else or can be contaminated by mishandling. It's always a good ideal to get a second opinion or even a second test.
JED

I've been told many times that people confuse bacterial vaginosis and chlamydia. Also many people think they have a urinary infection when it really is a STD because they are urogenital diseases, effecting both urinary tract and genital. If a test was done at the doctor's office, then I'd maybe get a second opinion from the department of health. They offer free tests. There are lab tests and there are swab tests. You can get an at-home test off the internet. I googled and from what I saw it seems if you buy the tests in the US, they are more expensive. You can buy from somewhere like the UK cheaper.

Chlamydia is often misdiagnosed. It is not always easy to detect so it goes untreated.

There are no at home tests for it. You need a doctor.

While JED gave good information - I have a hard time believing that lab techs constantly screw up on lab results. That is putting them liable for alot of lawsuits if that was the case.
Can Chlamydia be misdianosed? Yes, it can be - sometimes it's hard to distinguish Chlamydia and Gonorrhea and chlamydia can also be misdianosed with BV. Of course, this is why they do std panel testing and other testing for something like BV or YI.
Chlamydia tests (NAAT testing/DNA PCR) have a 95% accuracy at it's lowest count. It's why we, in the US, have such a high rate of Chlamydia because our testing has gotten extremely better from the tests that range a 60-80% accuracy.
Have you been tested? If not, request this imediately from your doctor, Planned Parenthood (pay sliding scale) or local health department (minimumal payment).
As for at home tests; yes, they are available but you run the risk of pricing (pretty high) and human error.

Good Luck.

chlamydia can be msdiagonosed as can ANY disease. However, its VERY important o get treated asap if you're a waoman and suspect you have it. Some women don't even have symptoms! The longer you wait requesting a second test the geater risk you have of developing pelvic inflammitory disease and/or infertility.
