Does Stevens-Johnson and TEN have to be from medication?!

Question: My father is in the hospital in critical condition and they have no idea what is wrong. Every doctor is perplexed and says that it is just like Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, but he hasnt had ANY medication in over a year. Can ANYTHING else cause either of these conditions, or is there any other disease that has the same exact symptoms to the above two? (Symptoms being a cough or slight fever, then a rash beginning in the genital area and spreading before the skin begins to blister and peel off, much like a burn).

Oh my goodness he must be feeling truly aweful.

Its my understanding that this shocking condition is caused by medication, that the person has recently started to take.

Are you absolutely sure he has not started any medication recently? Even something like a herbal medication could cause it.

Having had experience with this very scary condition, and all I had was one tablet, with in half an hour I was not well, my hands feet, knees, lips etc had swollen and gone cherry red, my heart was pounding, and I felt sick & dizzy, as well as feeling like the flu coming, migraine type headache, eventually passing out after vomiting (stage 1). luckily for me I know what the drug was, and must wear a Medic Alert bracelet.

I honestly hope he pulls through, and they can find out what the triggering factor is, if they do ensure that he wears a Medic Alert medallion.

Although the cause isn't always clear, Stevens-Johnson syndrome usually is a specific type of allergic reaction in response to medication or infection.

THIS STEVENS-JOHNSON CONDITION CAN ALSO BE CAUSED BY A RECENT VIRUS INFECTION.

Risk factors
Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a rare and unpredictable reaction. No test is available to help predict who is at greater risk. Some factors, however, may increase your risk of developing Stevens-Johnson syndrome:

Existing medical conditions. Viral infections, diseases that decrease your immunity, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and systemic lupus erythematosus
