Is hpv and herpes the same std?Been asked this and don't know??!

Question: HPV is human papilloma virus. There are many strains. Some strains (HPV 8, HPV 11) lead to genital warts; some of these "burn-out" and go away. However some of these strains (16, 18, 31, 33, etc) can lead to cancer of the cervix. Cancer of the cervix is deadly and can spread across the body (metastatic cervical carcinoma).

HSV is herpes simplex virus. There are multiple strains. HSV 1 usually causes cold sores of the mucous membranes of the mouth, and HSV 2 can cause herpes in the genital area. HSV 2 in pregnancy can be serious; if the woman has blisters on her genitalia near the time of delivery, a caesarian section may be necessary to deliver the baby without infecting it. Infecting the baby can cause a lung infection or even worse, a brain infection (herpes encephalitis). There are other strains of herpes virus [Human Herpes Virus 8 causes Kaposi's Sarcoma, a vascular tumor that affects immunodeficient (for example AIDS) patients]. To see these red blotches, see the movie "Philadelphia" with Tom Hanks.

Both viruses are transmitted by unprotected sex.

hpv is a viral infection that about 75% of people will contract in their lifetime. it CAN lead to genital warts, in some strains

herpes is like cold sores on your genitals, different than genital warts because apparently they are painful

so the short answer is, no

No, they are not the same. HPV is the Human Papilloma Virus, and HSV is the Herpes Simplex Virus, two different viruses.

In general, "Scary" is correct. HPV (human papillomavirus) causes venereal warts. It is a concern because a few strains are know to increase the chances of cervical cancer. It is the main reason sexually active women need regular pap smears. It is also concerning because "safe sex" techniques do little to prevent its transmission.

HSV (herpes simplex virus type II (type I is generally oral)) is a different family of virus. The same family causes chicken pox, by the way, as well as its successor "shingles" or zoster. Think pain with HSV. It cannot be cured, though, it can be treated. It is also transmissible to babies as they are being born if the mother has an active outbreak. Very important to monitor this if you are considering pregnancy.

No, herpes is also known as hsv1 or hsv2...hpv is human papilloma virus.

If you had a history of choosing best answer I would have given you a very clear and thoughtful answer. However, since you don't take the time to choose best answer or no best answer and instead decide to leave your questions up to the voters you don't deserve my time, or anyone else's for that matter. Thanks for the easy 2 points!

they are both viruses and have similar characteristics but they are in fact different stds all together. they do have different symptoms. herpes happens in more of a blister or sore form and they are painful. hpv is more of a wart not a blister or sore and it can cause cervical cancer herpes i don't think does not.
