What does it mean if your blood pressure is 135 over 101?!

Question: Depends on how and when it was measured: if you're calmed down, and that's what it reads, it means you need to see a doctor about getting it under control, because those are numbers that scream hypertension (high blood pressure) and leaving it like that too long will likely have it creep up over time to higher levels, and this can cause permanent heart damage if it is allowed to remain like that too long, or cause a stroke or heart attack and possibly kill you.

It is unsettling how quickly those things can spiral out of control: one month I went into the doctor's office for a respiratory tract infection, had normal (lower than that!) blood pressure, the next month is was 155/110, and when they did an EKG for the physical, it showed my heart had a rhythm problem, which typically indicates the heart wasn't getting enough oxygen for part of it. A stress test showed that despite that abnormal heart rhythm (which hadn't been there several years before) that the heart was getting enough oxygen, but it was still not ideal. Now that I've been on blood pressure meds for over a year, that has largely healed itself, but it isn't gone yet (if it ever will be).

For some people, the blood pressure is affected by many different things causing a problem: they may have some hormone/endocrine problem that's popped up suddenly, they may have changed their diet/exercise habits in a bad way recently, their kidneys may not be working all that well due to renal failure (kidney stones cause damage that can affect that: the kidneys largely affect blood pressure, and high blood pressure can also destroy kidneys, and I can state from experience, you want no degree of renal failure!) and for some people (several in my family) it seems we're genetically predisposed to have our blood pressure explode at some point with no apparent reason.
