Can Heparin....?!

Question: I was on Heparin for 10 months due to a DVT in my leg during pregnancy. I was told to expect some bleeding of the gums, but I also noticed that my teeth were becoming softer. By the time I was taken off the heparin my teeth had started to break...Is this a side effect from the heparin. I was told not to see a dentist while I was on the heparin, so I didnt and now Im not so sure I did the right thing. Can anyone help with this?

I gave myself an injection of 5000 units twice a day in the stomach.

The previous answer is good for short term side effects. Long term heparin is associated with bone loss and can affect the teeth. That is why, with the exception of pregnancy, most patients are placed on coumadin for long term therapy.

Umm, you ask a good question. I can see why your doctor told you not to see a dentist while using Heparin, seeing as it is a blood thinner and most times dentist might nick a part of your mouth and being on Heparin you would bleed more. Honestly, the only true side effect of Heparin is bleeding. I hope this helps...If you're not on it anymore check with your PCM or your dentist if they think it is ok to go now. Drink milk...
