Excessive fluid on the brain ( brain shunt )?!

Question: My 65 year old father Has had a Brain shunt placed into his skull.
I would like to know If there will be any affects on his health?
He would not allow me or my sister to visit his Neurologist & will not discuss anything about his condition with us, all he will say is "every thing is fine now"...

Advice from professionals or people who have experience would be appreciated, thank you.

Hydrocephalus (water on the brain) is not uncommon in a senior. He should feel much better and have no ill effects because the shunt is in place. He was probably experiencing dizziness, headaches, etc prior to the shunt insertion. My grandpa had 1 and lived until he was 96 yrs old. GL

Trust your father for the time being. My nephew had a shunt put in and also I have a close friend who's son has had on in his head for over 13 years. They are a life saver but when he goes through a medal detector, the alarm is going to go off.

Hi my little brother (now 9) had a shunt fitted when he was a few hours old. Pressure from the fluid that was blocked in his left ventricle meant that he is very weak in the right side of his body (he can still walk, but with a limp, he has a lazy eye and can't use his right hand). He has no mental disability, he attends a mainstream school. I would like to stress that all this happened before his shunt was fitted. Since he had it fitted he has had one fit because of an infection in the shunt when he had a high temperature. My parents are very wary about him bumping his head or about him having headaches (as this can be a sign of a blockage in the shunt). These are very rare occurences though and your father will have been given advice on symptoms to watch out for. Other than that there are no other effects that the shunt should have on his life. I hope this helps:)

I too have excess brain fluid-I do not have a shunt but instead I receive lumbar punctures. This is a needle put in your spine and then it measures the pressure in your spine from the fluid if it is to high they then drain some of the fluid to bring the pressures down to a normal range. There has been talk of putting in a shunt but I am sceptical about them.
When you place a foreign object in your body there is lots that can go wrong but doctors believe that a shunt is less risky then doing punctures.I think the worse possible affect from a shunt that would be negative is that the shunt gets blocked and then has to be replaced. With punctures the worse affect can be paralysis from the needle hitting a nerve wrong-there you go it is the most I know about non-draining brain fluid....At least now your Dad will not have to have lumbar punctures every 6-8 months. My condition is called cranial hypertension and is different from hydrocephalus.quite simple my cerebral fluid does not drain like it should-this left untreated will cause eye troubles and severe headaches,
