I'm not a doctor and I don't know the reason for the kidney failure so given that: If the kidneys are no longer functioning and the doctor has recommended dialysis, a shunt will be created in the arm (usually). The shunt will either be formed from the patient's own artery/vein or one will be created with an artificial shunt placed in the arm. The shunt is used to perform the dialysis. It takes a short time for the shunt to mature (if native) so until then a temporary port will be placed. Dialysis is when the blood is filtered through an artificial kidney on the dialysis machine. Two needles are placed in the patient's arm using the shunt. One removes blood (not all at the same time) and the other returns the blood after it has gone through the artificial kidney. This cleanses the blood and removes excess fluid not excreted by the kidneys. This usually takes 3-4 hours a day 3 days a week, although times and days do vary. The patient also has the option of doing dialysis at home or through what is called continual abdominal peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) wherein a shunt is placed in the abdomen and the patient flushes this several times a day with a fluid solution.
