White blood cell count of 22?!

Question: My sister went to get a blood test because doctors predicted mono. She got part of her tests back and her white blood cell count was 22. Doctors said the normal range was 4-11. Is it mono? She says she's not tired at all and she doesn't think she has it.

White blood cells (WBCs) are a part of the body's immune system. An elevated WBC count usually means that an infection is present. It does not point to mono specicifically, it just means that your body is trying to fight off some infection. (or it could mean that your body is malfunctioning out-of-control in it's production of WBCs, which would indicate another illness).

But anyway, most-likely, your sister has some sort of infection and your doctor needs to do a culture to find out what microorganism is causing the elevated WBC count. Her body may be able to fight off the infection on its own or the doctor may prescribe antibiotics.
