Cure for Diabetes?!

Question: How long do you think it will be before we see a complete cure for diabetes? And what form will it take? Stem cell therapy? I have been a diabetic for 53 years and enough is enough! LOL! Obviously I'm not going to be completely complication free at this stage, but so far everything is still working. No retinitis, slightly high BP which I'm taking meds for and some kidney impairment but still considered 'normal.'

Hi I'm type 1 and had it 7 years, I have 5-7 injections a day alos takes meds for BP and kidney. I am 26 years old, so quite young to be having probs with blood pressure etc. :o(. In the last 5 years I think we have made some amazing developments! We've discovered stem cells can be used and although in this country we are only allowed transplants from dead donors........in other countries they have been successful with live donors etc. I suppose the only worry at the moment is the anti rejection drugs and whether they have any long term effects. They are also testing an injection that could prevent non diabetics from rejecting their own stem cells, if this works it could help diabetics and possibly even then help to start making healthy ones again. They are also developing something similar to a pacemaker thats an impanted device and automatically releases insulin. So although this is not a complete cure at the moment, I don't think we are that far from it.

Who knows...........:o)

I have had Diabetes for 5 yrs now and pills don't help so I'm on Insulin. there are days I wish I didn't have to give myself shots. I don't know if there will be a cure in my lifetime but I do hope one day there will be so no one else has to suffer with this awful disease any more.

First of all you have not told what type of diabetes you suffer from. There are Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

DIABETES is not a curable disease. It can only be controlled.
Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed by our body for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play major roles. An estimate says about 12 per cent of the world population suffer from diabetes of which just little over 50 per cent people are diagnosed with the disease, while the rest unfortunately not aware of that they have the disease.

MAJOR TYPES OF DIABETES.

Type 1 Diabetes - Results from the failure of the body to produce insulin, the hormone that, unlocks the cells of the body, allowing glucose to enter and fuel them. It is estimated that 5 to 10 per cent of Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes have Type 1 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes - Results from insulin resistance (a condition in which the body fails to properly use insulin), combined with relative insulin deficiency. Most Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes have type 2 Diabetes.

MEASURES TO BE TAKEN FOR CONTROLLING DIABETES AND PREVENTION
