I have an ingrown toenail. What can I do about it.?!

Question: I think I made it worse by cutting the nail more because that is what I usually do and it is fine. This time it made it worse! I have to work a 9 hour shift tonight standing and walking the whole time! Is there any medicine I can get for it from the drug store?

Dr. Scholls (sp?) has an ingrown tonail kit with pads, bandages, and a gel that works wonders. I'd been living with one for a couple of months and really thought that I was going to have to see a doctor this time.

The gel (smells foul but really works) will wear down the nail and skin around it while desensitizing it a bit and in a few days you should be able to get to it easily and get it out. That said, the pad that surrounds the gel usually extends past the end of your toe and is best worn at night when you won't have shoes pressing on it. Think about yanking on a fake fingernail and you'll get the general idea.

In the meantime, just to get you through your shift, use something on it with numbing properties. (Note: Don't do this if it's seriously infected) Even Ambesol would help (wrong end, I know, but numb is numb, right?... and at least your toe can't taste it). Just look around your medicine cabinet for something that has a main ingredient ending in "caine" a la benzocaine, lidocaine, etc. In short, you're looking for a topical anesthetic. This is *only* if it's not infected and *only* to get you through one shift. Either take care of it yourself or see a doctor as soon as you can.

No.
You have to excise/remove the nail.
A surgeon will do this for you.

soak and cut it

Have it removed.

go to a doctor.. he will probably put alchohol on it, numb it.. and pull it out... and u will be good to go

You could go get a pedicure and tell them about it and see what they can do. Or you can go to the doctor (my friend went to her doc) and he/she can either take it out or whatever

Did you successfully remove the portion of the nail that is diggin into your toe?
In the future, when you trim your toenails.......trim them STRAIGHT across.......not ROUNDED like you do your fingers.

unfortunately no there is nothing that i know of for pain except for Tylenol but you can soak your foot in Epsom salt and that should help the healing of the toe

Don' know any medication you can take, but i have two and you can't even tell and they don't hurt. i have had them for years but i take care of them by cutting the nail into the side of were the skin is not too far down. this way when it grows you can bend the nail out and clip it off. I have not been in pain for years and they don't get red. i can still where open toe shoes and go around bare foot.

remove it yourself, painful but its the only way

Ok i have had so many of them i have had to get a sugery to reconstruct my big toe cuz they were so bad
soak it in vineger and use a knife to try to cut it out it feels way better using a knife

dont let it get stepped on it hurts!

those hurt-bad...wen you're taking a shower try taking some nail clippers and take out that portian...if not go to a doctor and they can remove the whole tonail and it wont hurt so bad. :)

Well I do to, just cut it like on the sides and if you do it more than 2weeks and it still doesnt feel better then talk to your Dr.

An ingrown toenail is incurvation or im-pingement of a nail border into its adjacent nail fold, causing pain.
You can treat most ingrown toenails at home. Here's how:
* Soak your feet. Do this for 15 to 20 minutes three times a day, using warm salt water (1 teaspoon of table salt per pint of water) or warm, soapy water. Soaking reduces swelling and relieves tenderness.
* Give your nail some help. Put fresh bits of cotton under the ingrown edge after each soaking. This will help the nail eventually grow above the skin edge.
* Use a topical antibiotic. Apply an antibiotic ointment and bandage the tender area.
* Choose sensible footwear. Consider wearing open-toed shoes or sandals until your toe feels better.
* Take pain relievers. If there's severe pain, take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) to relieve the pain until you can make an appointment with a podiatrist or dermatologist.
* Check your feet. If you have diabetes, check your feet daily for signs of ingrown toenails or other foot problems.

i know how yu feel.i'm going through one now, and i'm gonna have it cut
well.. it depends on which stage it is in..
try warm soaks with diluted water with salt or vinegar. apply some over-the-counter antibiotic that you get in the pharmacy. i use Polisporin Heal Fast.
but, if you start getting pus and stuff, GO SEE THE DOCTOR immediately. it may be a pain, but he sure comforts you. take pain killers like advil etc, before going to work and where loose fitting shoes (preferably slippers) he'll cut a part of the nail, even though my idiotic doctor pulled the full on out last time. its reoccuring for me now, and i'm going to have to block the nerves and get a 3rd of my nail cut out...so scared but its nice to know that i;m not the only one here...
**removing the full toenail doesnt work, ask your doctor about removing the part of nail instead because then after your nail starts growing again, its prone to grow as an ingrown toenail again....and im sure you dont want to go through it again, like i am now..

TIP:: placing cotton under the toenail is nothing but a myth..IT DOESNT WORK AT ALL..trust me, mine got way worse and its clinically proven now..

good luck and Take care!! xD

You should be careful, are you diabetic? I was always told to clip a "V" in the middle part of the toenail (only at the end where you normally cut) and it is suppose to help the toenail to grow that way instead of the inward way. You are supposed to cut your toenails straight across but most people cut them too short and inward at the edges, thus walla, ingrown!
My suggestion is to try and put a small piece of cotton under the edge of the ingrown part. It will help relieve the pressure and pain for you to work tonight. Then go to your Dr. if it doesn't start to get better soon.
