Can you catch shingles from being in the same room as someone who has them?!

Question: ShinglesRisksThe blisters (vesicles) that develop as a result of shingles contain virus particles. The virus can be spread through direct contact with open blisters. A person who has shingles is contagious until the last blister has scabbed over.

If you have not had chickenpox before (usually young children), you can catch it from someone with shingles. However, you cannot catch shingles from someone with shingles because the virus has to be reactivated, rather than passed on. If you have had chickenpox in the past, you are immune and cannot get it again.

Pregnant women

If you are pregnant and have not had chickenpox, you should avoid contact with someone who has shingles.

If you are pregnant and get shingles, your risk of getting pneumonia is increased. There is also a slight risk that if your unborn child is exposed to the herpes varicella-zoster virus, your baby may be damaged or miscarried. However, this is less likely with shingles than chickenpox.

Weak immune system

If you have a weak immune system, it is best to avoid close contact with someone with shingles. If you have a shingles rash, you should avoid sharing towels, going swimming, or playing contact sports, in order to avoid passing the virus on to someone who has not had chickenpox.

Hope you don't catch them.

Hope you don't catch them.

no , other wise anyone suffering would have their own room in hospital

According to the CDC, 'yes, people with shingles are contagious to persons who have not had chickenpox. Therefore, people who have not had chickenpox can catch chickenpox if they have close contact with a person who has shingles. However, you can not catch shingles itself from someone else. Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus which has been dormant (staying quiet) in your body ever since you had chickenpox. So, you get shingles from your own chickenpox virus, not from someone else.'

you have to have direct contact with the person.

Not usually, its more a direct transmission. That said, anybody with shingles in a hospital IS isolated and contact precautions with full gloves and gowns to enter the room are enforced to prevent transmitting them to other staff, patients etc. Health staff are more at risk when in the same room as they're in direct contact with the person, their bedlinen, clothing etc. If you're concerned, you're better to treat youself than not... just in case -like headlice. There are plenty of treatments available over the counter at your local pharmacy.

If you have never had chickenpox you will not get shingles. Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus reactivating for some reason. You cannot catch shingles from someone else.

no but you can get chicken pox, if you have ot already had them.

No, but a child can catch chickenpox so don't go anywhere near children. If you get shingles it means you had chickenpox as a child .The virus stays in the body and when you're low you are vulnerable to it .seek medical advice to get it cleared up quickly as it can be very painful and can sometimes last for years.

No! Shingles can only be caught by actually touching the affected area, and only by a person who has never had Chicken Pox.

Shingles cannot be passed from one person to another. However, the virus that causes shingles, VZV, can be spread from a person with active shingles to a person who has never had chickenpox through direct contact with the rash. The person exposed would develop chickenpox, not shingles. The virus is not spread through sneezing, coughing or casual contact. A person with shingles can spread the disease when the rash is in the blister-phase. Once the rash has developed crusts, the person is no longer contagious. A person is not infectious before blisters appear or with post-herpetic neuralgia (pain after the rash is gone).
