What could this be??!

Question: Hi,
I am a 14 year old female, and lately (past 5 months) I have been an incredible amount of pain. I had an MRI done in November of my cervical neck/part of my thoracic spine. They said everything was fine, but it is not. I cannot sit any more without have excruciating pain in my right shoulder. If I tilt my neck down, i get an instant sharp pain in my right shoulder blade area. I barley get sleep at night because I cannot get comfortable. I have alot of weakness, and muscle spasm (constant) in my upper portion of my back. I have numbness under my armpit if I use my right arm. I cannot stand all this pain!! I am going to the doctors next month, but does anyone have any ideas. Please don't say what I should be doing; I have tried everything (heat, massage, ice, physical therapy). I just want to know if anyone had an idea of what it could be. Is it possible the MRI missed it?

Thank-you=)

Sure, an MRI can miss lots of things...especially things that are changable such as a disc protrusion/herniation. An MRI is only a picture at one moment in time. Since most MRIs are done lying down, it does not always give an accurate picture of what is happening when you are sitting and/or moving.

What did your physical therapy consist of? It may be time for a second opinion in physical therapy. Just like people get second opinions from doctors, it's often necessary to get second opinions of physical therapy. If your PT was not certified in mechanical diagnosis and therapy, I'd recommend you see someone who is. You can go to: http://www.mckenziemdt.org at the very least, they can give you a good idea if the MRI missed a disc protrusion. At least you might have a better answer as to what the problem is.

I agree w/Mistify,do as she said do.
