Sleep paralysis is a condition characterized by temporary paralysis of the body shortly after waking up (hypnopompic paralysis) or, less often, shortly before falling asleep.

Physiologically, it is closely related to the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is known as REM atonia. Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain awakes from a REM state, but the bodily paralysis persists. This leaves the person fully aware, but unable to move.

Possible causes

* Sleeping in an upwards supine position
* Irregular sleeping schedules; naps, sleeping in, sleep deprivation
* Increased stress
* Sudden environmental/lifestyle changes
* A lucid dream that immediately precedes the episode. Also conscious induction of sleep paralysis is a common technique to enter a state of lucid dreams, also known as WILD .
* Artificial sleeping aides, ADD medications and/or antihistamines[citation needed]
* Recent use of hallucinogenic drugs

I would go see a doctor.

I think catatonia is a stage of schizophrenia. People who are catatonic are not trying to snap out of it, it's just a mental state of being disconnected.

Perhaps you should seek psychiatric help.

Panic attacks are not uncommon, especially in young teens. Go see your guidance counselor, if that person is someone you feel comfortable talking to and let them guide you.

If you wouldn't feel comfortable talking to them, go to a teacher you have a good relationship with or some other adult. But, yes, talk to someone, if it concerns you and is recurrent.

Good Luck.

What you are suffering is called "Sleep Paralysis".

When we go into a deep sleep (REM) where we dream our brains shut down the body so that during the dream we do not hurt ourselves or others by lashing out or reacting to our dream.

Many people, including myself, have suffered 'waking sleep paralysis' and this is what is happening with you.

Your brain is becoming completely awake before your body is.

It's nothing to be afraid of and is normal. Most people have suffered it but they put it down to still being in the dream. Their brain is not as awake as yours is.

Hello again Skye.

I did a little research about Catatonia. It is a very serious disorder and should not be taken lightly.
The best advice I can give you is to talk to your parents about this and definitely see a specialist that is trained in this area.
The sooner, the better.

Do not feel afraid or embarrassed to do so.

i would talk to a doctor sweetie let him know .it may be nothing but best to be sure.

better to be safe then sorry, go see a doctor....
