Hi: It would depend on your marital situation, age (perhaps you're young and don't want your parents to know)...but basically, you can have a yeast infection that can cause burning and itching 'down there'; a bladder infection - did the doctor actually examine you to rule out a UTI?..if so he should have told you what it was, rather than just tell you what it wasn't; Chlamydia (a sexually-transmitted disease); any one of a myriad of things. Something doesn't compute about your doctor not clearing up your questions...or problem. I am assuming you're female? If it is a yeast infection (which has to be diagnosed by a physical exam)..a one-time pill of Diflucan will clear it up. (Trust me, it works) :) In the meantime, use cool compresses (soft, damp cloths) to ease the burning. Wear cotton underclothing ONLY. If you're a girl, you can wear pads as well, which will make you a bit more comfortable. The most you can do as far as 'self-treatment' goes is something like a light dusting of corn starch (NOT talcum powder..which can cause major problems for women down the road)..if you're a boy...you really need an exam as well. If you'd rather go to a walk-in clinic ...or go to your local hospital for an exam, you can do that too, if you don't have a gynecologist (your best bet). There are a lot of infections that can cause the same symptoms. But bottom line ..you must be examined by a doctor and treated properly in case it is something that can be transmitted. Most of these problems won't go away on their own, but are easily treated with the proper medicines.
Take care and good luck.

P.S. many women develop yeast infections after being given courses of antibiotics which upset the balance of your normal 'flora and fauna', causing the yeast infection...Too many physicians don't realize they should also prescribe an 'anti-fungal' med at the same time to head off the problem. If it happens once, it will likely happen again...so the patient needs to ask for the medicine upon being prescribed antibiotics...each time..and make sure it's recorded in your file at the doctor's office.

Goodness...your doctor told you it is not an UTI...well, he/she should have told you what it is than.
Go back than and let them treat you.
Don't wait or fool around with stuff like that.
You can check your symptoms on webmd.com but I wouldn't waste much time figuring it out on my own.

Good Luck ;-)
