Herpes question....?!

Question: is it possible to have the herpes infection for a long time without ever knowing it? i have been in a managomous relationship and we were both tested before becoming sexually active with one another with all testing coming back negative. well, i just found out that i have herpes, is it possible that either one or the other of us had it for a long time and never knew?

thanks in advance

ALSO... what kind or precautions do i need to take? i have told my partner about our "infection" and he is a really great man, and has felt so bad about it, because he has never had any symptoms of it before, so he never knew that he had it, however, we are working through this difficult situation and we are completely manogomous, however im just wondering what precautions i need to take to make sure that i dont pass this to my children? is it possible for them to get it through contact with everyday items like towels n such

Yes the herpes virus can lay dormant in your system for years. For that reason, 80% of people that carry the virus are unaware that they actually have it. Because the virus can lay dormant, it is very difficult to pinpoint who gave you the virus - it is not necessarily the case that your current partner gave it to you, but rather you could have contracted the virus from a previous partner.

The herpes virus is passed on via skin to skin contact with the infected area so it is highly unlikely you will pass it onto your kids if you observe proper hygiene, ie washing and drying your hands after you go to the bathroom etc. You can't catch the virus from inanimate objects such as towels or toilet seats.

Good luck.

Like many viruses, you can have them for years before they cause problems, so in theory, YES. You can be infected & not get an outbreak until years later. I'm not sure what the time period between infection & testing positve for it is though.

I don't want to be Debbie Downer, but in most monogamous relationships when theres a partner that contracts an STD, its because the other partner contracted it in recent times.

Yes, it is possible to have herpes a long time without showing any symptoms. There's really not much chance of passing genital herpes to your children EXCEPT during childbirth if you are suffering an outbreak during delivery (the doctor will most likely perform a C-Section to avoid infecting the baby). As for contamination via towels and other such items, its not very likely. Even when on toilet seats, the virus within a short time dies once its outside the body, provided that it doesn't come in contact with a mucous membrane within that short time. You cannot pass the virus through swimming pools or other such circumstances, either. Hope this helps.

yes herpes can lie dormant for a long time and a person who contracted it wouldn't even know they have herpes until they had an outbreak. u should talk to your doctor about that but the best thing to do to prevent spreading would be to not have sex while u have symptoms of an outbreak or have any sores/blisters down there. also use condoms even if u have only a few blisters/sores or symptoms of an outbreak. it is possable to pass it on through shared towels but the chances of that happening are kind of low.

Here is the deal.

The virus can lay dormant, BUT that is AFTER you have your first outbreak.

MOST people who get genital herpes will have an outbreak within 2 WEEKS OF EXPOSURE TO SOMEONE WHO HAS IT.

Some people only have one outbreak in their whole life, but many people get them more often.

VALTREX will prevent outbreaks, and it will prevent the spread during childbirth.

NORMAL STD tests do not test for herpes.

You have to request a special BLOOD test for it.
